WakeParents & Families

E-newsletter from the Office of Family Engagement

Summer is a slow time on campus in terms of student activity, but a very busy time as our newest Deacs in the Class of 2021 (and their parents/families) have a lot of things to do to prepare for the start of school.

The newstudents.wfu.edu website is the place for the Class of 2021 students to check due dates, deadlines, information about class registration, housing, and more. There is also a Parents and Families section that family members should read.

Wishing you and your family a great summer!

Betsy Chapman ('92, MA '94)
Director of Family Communications and Volunteer Management

  • Finally, students will receive the Course Preference Survey on July 21, to be submitted after the completion of Round I of registration (July 24-28) and no later than July 28.
  • Students should contact OAA as soon as possible if there are any conflicts with these dates.

New Student Receptions are available in many areas of the country with concentrations of incoming students. We encourage you to register for one if there is an option in your area.

Orientation schedule: Visit http://go.wfu.edu/newdeac17 to download the WFU Orientation Programs app. You will find the most up-to-date information, including schedules, maps, and much more. On a laptop/desktop computer or unsupported mobile device, visit http://go.wfu.edu/nd17online to access the content in your web browser. (on the left menu, choose Schedule By Tracks and then Parents and Families to see activities for parents/families). A few notes:

  • Move-in for 1st year students will be on Wednesday, August 23rd (unless your student applies and is accepted into a pre-Orientation program) which would mean moving in a bit earlier (each program has a different move-in day and all of that information would be shared directly with your student if/ when participation is confirmed).
  • All pre-Orientation programs end on 8/22 or 8/23, thus your student would be back to participate in the New Deac Week (aka Orientation) experience with the rest of the class of 2021.
  • As it relates to Parent & Family participation, there are a few optional sessions just after 3 p.m. on Wednesday, August 23rd with a highly attended session that night around 7:30 p.m. which will be led by our Director of the Counseling Center, one of our doctors from Student Health as well as a plethora of professional colleagues within the Division of Campus Life.
  • On Thursday (8/24), Parents and Families have a full day of sessions both with and without their student(s) that will go through 7 p.m. Some parents may opt to spend the night and travel back home on Friday morning, but all formal programming for Parents and Families will conclude around 7 pm on Thursday, August 24th.
  • As you will notice, we will continue to refer to "Parents and Families" as we understand that some students may come with more than just a parental figure, and siblings are welcome!

It feels different
May 16, 2017

It feels very different on campus now that all the students are gone and no families are here. You can see what his happening on the Quad via the Quad Cam — as of lunchtime Tuesday, the 13,000 chairs are off the grass and neatly stacked or removed. We hope all our families had a great Commencement experience. [more ...]
