E-newsletter from the Office of Family Engagement

Happy New Year, Deac families! We ended the first weekend of the spring semester with a snowstorm. You can see some of the snowy fun on Instagram at Wake Forest University. If your student isn't aware, sleds are available to check out in two-hour increments at the Benson Center information desk (WFU ID required).

This Monday, President Wente sent a message to the campus community about the life and lasting legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. She recalled that Dr. King gave a speech in Wait Chapel in 1962:

  • Nearly sixty years ago, in October 1962, the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stood at the pulpit in Wait Chapel and delivered a speech to the audience of 2,200 Wake Forest students, faculty, and staff assembled. He spoke these powerful words that echoed across his all-too-short life and now, in our current times, should again reverberate in our collective consciousness:

“We must have faith in the future... Somehow, we must believe that there is something at work in the universe to bring about good in society. And so that faith in the future must tell us that [today’s problems] can be solved. Why? Because the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.”

You can read Dr. Wente's full message here.

Here are a some other news items we want parents and families to know:

  • Encourage your student to come to the Spring Involvement Fair on February 2 from 4-6 pm in 4th floor Benson Center. This is a way for your students to meet leaders from student organizations and learn ways to find meaningful connections and engagement on campus.
  • Meet Dr. Shea Kidd Brown, Vice President for Campus Life. Dr. Shea shared greetings with students last week in their WFU Should Know enewsletter; read her message.
  • 24/7 mental health support tool now available for students: The University Counseling Center has partnered with TimelyCare, a student-focused telehealth company, to expand and enhance mental health support for our students. These services are free, confidential, and available now for students. Encourage students to learn more and activate their account at timelycare.com/wakeforest.
  • At the start of each semester, we encourage families to review our Family Communications Guidelines and Philosophy, so you are aware of when and how you will hear from Wake Forest, as well as best ways to support your student.

Let's make it a great spring semester! Go Deacs!

Campus Safety

Wake Forest uses the Wake Alert system — voicemail, email, text message, website and web banners, and social media (Twitter, Facebook) — to notify faculty, staff and students when the University believes that members of the Wake Forest community could be at risk. Those messages are issued as soon as pertinent, vetted information is available. It may take time for authorities to investigate, verify and provide instructions or updates. Based on recent feedback, the University will communicate more extensively about incidents in the vicinity of campus for the sake of greater community awareness. Read more about recent University alerts.

Wake Forest University Police: WFUPD welcomes Major Jamie Herring and Monae Merck, starting with the department on January 4. WFUPD will be hosting our Citizen Police Academy (CPA) starting January 19. The CPA is open to students, faculty, and staff where they gain knowledge about all divisions of our department. WFUPD wants to extend a welcome back!

We encourage parents and families to sign up to receive crime alerts on the Wake Ready website, in addition to downloading the LiveSafe app. While crime alerts are sent in real time to students, faculty and staff, they are not for others. For those registered through Wake Ready, crime alerts are emailed daily at noon, but only if new alerts have been posted in the previous 24 hours.

Any emails that are sent to students, faculty, and staff are archived on the Family News website.
