WakeParents & Families

E-newsletter from the Office of Family Engagement

Happy July, Deac families! We are eagerly preparing for the arrival of the Class of 2026 on campus in August, and the return of all our upperclass students too.

Family Weekend registration will go live on Wednesday, August 3 at 10 a.m. Mark your calendars now and plan to log in when it opens. There are events that can — and do — sell out, so please act promptly to secure tickets to events that are important to you.

As a reminder, Family Weekend is October 7-9; you can purchase tickets to the WF-Army football game on October 8th via Athletics. Game time will likely be announced 10 days before the game due to television scheduling. Students can get a free ticket to sit in the students’ football section with their WFU ID. If your student wants to sit with you, you will need to purchase a ticket for your student.

Hope you and your family are having a wonderful summer. Go Deacs!

Go Deacs!

Incoming Families of the Class of 2026

Welcome, P’26s (families of newly-admitted students in the Class of 2026)!

From the Office of Academic Advising (OAA):

  • While registration for Fall 2022 has come to a close, incoming students will be permitted to make changes to their Fall 2022 schedule before classes begin but following the mandatory small-group and individual meeting with their assigned academic adviser during New Deac Week (Friday, August 19).
  • It is very common for students to make changes to their schedule during this time, as well as once classes start, and students are encouraged to work closely with their assigned academic advisor (assignments will be made in August) on any registration changes.
  • On a related note, your student should begin to become familiar with the firm deadlines on the Academic Services Calendar hosted on the Office of the University Registrar website here, which contains important deadlines such as the last day to add and drop classes for the semester.

From WakeWare, the Student Laptop Program:

  • Due to expected shipping delays, we encourage you to place your WakeWare order as soon as possible for the best chance of your computer arriving before the start of school.
  • Vendor Hardware and Promotion Announcements:
  • As a reminder, in order to support a portable learning environment, every student is required to bring a laptop to campus. You can learn more about minimum computer requirements here.

Additional information for incoming families

  • If your family was not not able to attend our June Virtual New Student Reception, we will host a second one on July 20 (which will contain the same essential material). The last 15 minutes of the virtual reception will contain information for international students. The session will be recorded and posted in the days following the event.
  • We hope you have been reviewing the advice page, with information on how best to support your student and their burgeoning independence. You can best serve your student’s college readiness by using a ’consultant’ approach, while allowing them to steer their own ship.
  • We know summer is vacation time for many families. In case you missed any of our Weekly Updates for Incoming Families, you can read our archive here.

Resources and News

From Residence Life and Housing: We’re over the ’half-way’ point of summer and the fall semester will be here before you know it! This month we’ve included reminders of important information you’ll need as you solidify your plans for returning to campus and information for incoming first-year students (’26) around what to expect as housing assignments are released later this month. Read more.

From the Office of Sustainability: Is your student interested in learning more about how to sort their waste on campus? We have the solution! The Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling just launched exciting new software to help the WFU community sort their waste! The software includes a fun interactive game that provides a visual for your waste as well as a search engine that allows you to search any item you may be unsure about. Click here for more info!

From the Office of Personal and Career Development (OPCD)::

  • Wake Forest University has many recruiting events starting in September for students who will be seeking jobs and internships in the coming school year. At these events, students learn about a wide range of organizations, job functions, and available opportunities and make valuable professional connections. Encourage students of any major to attend — and early registration is recommended.
  • No matter a student’s class year, the summer is a great time to meet with a career coach to develop a career action plan, explore possible career paths, or get ready for the intense Fall recruiting season. Learn more about how to get started.

Events

Information about vehicle registration will be emailed to students in the next week or two. If your student plans on bringing a car to campus, ask them to check their WFU email regularly for information about when vehicle registration opens and how to register.

Campus Safety

Wake Forest uses the Wake Alert system — voicemail, email, text message, website and web banners, and social media (Twitter, Facebook) — to notify faculty, staff and students when the University believes that members of the Wake Forest community could be at risk. Those messages are issued as soon as pertinent, vetted information is available. It may take time for authorities to investigate, verify and provide instructions or updates.
