WakeParents & Families

E-newsletter from the Office of Family Engagement

As the end of the academic year approaches, we are paying tribute to President Nathan O. Hatch, who retires on June 30th after a 16 year tenure at Wake Forest. Dr. Hatch and his wife Julie have made an incredible impact on Wake Forest. The Wake Forest Magazine profiled Dr. Hatch in an article entitled A Leader of Character:

Hatch wrote a few years ago of Wake Forest “when we live up to the aspirations of our own heightened vision, that is when we will truly be a place that stands out. In this distinct way, I trust Wake Forest will be a ‘resident alien’ in the realm of higher education — a community of learning and care so distinct, so extraordinary, so attractive that, in the words of our former professor Maya Angelou, ‘the world won’t be able to take its eyes off of us.’ ”

You can also see a timeline of Dr. Hatch’s tenure and other articles about Dr. Hatch at the Wake Forest Magazine website. We are grateful for the many accomplishments of Dr. and Mrs. Hatch and wish them all the best in retirement!

Penny Rue, Vice President for Campus Life, has also announced her plans to retire. Dr. Rue joined Wake Forest in July 2013 and took on broad responsibility for the safety and wellbeing of students and their education outside the classroom. She is a national higher education leader, having served as Board Chair for NASPA, the leading association for student affairs professionals. We are grateful for her service to Wake Forest and wish her every happiness in her next chapter.

Finally, we will welcome Dr. Susan Wente in July as Wake Forest’s 14th president. The Wake Forest Magazine has a wonderful interview with Dr. Wente where she talks about her childhood, her educational path, and career. She also shared her thoughts on how college is a time where students’ trajectories can be changed for the better:

This is what I think about in terms of our current undergraduates and my passion for mentoring and my passion for advising, my passion for us ensuring we’re thinking about each person as an individual, that we’re giving opportunity, that we are looking at college as a time when young people are in different phases of their development and how we provide an environment that’s safe and welcoming for them to really discover their full potential.

That is something I’ve worked to continue paying forward. ...It was not just getting an education that was transformational for what I’ve been able to do, but it was the people, the personal attention and [the advisers] ... who really listened to me.

Beautifully said! As we say goodbye to the 2020-21 academic year and some of our top leaders, we look forward to Dr. Wente’s arrival and all the great things we’ll do together.

Go Deacs!

Incoming Families of the Class of 2025

Incoming families should continue checking the calendar pages for June, July, and August for upcoming dates and deadlines. It is important to check the website regularly; things may be added or updated.

If you have not signed up for a virtual New Student Reception (June 22 or July 14), you can register here. Some local receptions have been scheduled; check this site for details and registration (note: more events could be added throughout the summer).

During the month of June, new students are encouraged to contact the Office of Academic Advising to have a telephone advising session with a member of our staff. Students should follow the schedule here and should use Forestry 101, the New Students website, and other resources to prepare specific questions. Due to volume, we cannot offer multiple telephone advising sessions; students should prepare their questions ahead of time. After their advising session, if they have additional questions they can email undergraduateadvising@wfu.edu. This email address is monitored closely, and your student will typically receive a reply within 48 hours. We will be accepting advising calls Monday – Friday, June 7 – July 2, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. EDT. No appointment is necessary, but students must call during their assigned week (see schedule above). If your student has missed their week, they should call as soon as possible.

Students will receive the DSP feedback before the first round of course registration in July. Students will receive the Course Preference Survey via their WFU email on Friday, July 9. Students should stay tuned to their WFU email for more information about registration from the Office of the University Registrar.

Please visit the New Students website for additional information on deadlines and to find resources to help you and your student prepare for the Fall 2021 semester.

WakeWare, the student laptop program, includes recommended models specially selected to work with all academic software, have educational-based pricing, provide loaner laptops in case repairs are needed, and have built-in accidental damage protection. If having the newest model available or taking advantage of back-to-school promotions is important to you, we encourage you to wait until later in the summer to make your purchase. Learn more about the differences between buying an Apple through WakeWare and the Apple Store. Contact WakeWare with any questions you may have at WakeWare@wfu.edu.

Fraternity and Sorority Life staff will host two webinars for incoming students and their families. We will discuss general information about our community, common values all of our organizations share, differences in our councils, and requirements to join a chapter. Register by clicking on the date you would like to attend: Wednesday, July 28 at 12:00 p.m. EST or Monday, August 9 at 5:00 p.m. EST.

We hope you have completed your Family Record Form, and have subscribed to the Daily Deac blog. Emails and the Daily Deac are two key ways we keep families informed. Please also read our Family Communications Guidelines and Philosophy.

Please be sure to read the rest of this enewsletter, P’25s, as the sections that follow contain general information for all families; we want to make sure you are aware of all parent and family information.

Academics

From the Office of Academic Advising (OAA):

  • For those students currently enrolled in summer school courses, please keep in mind that the last day to drop a full summer course is on June 21. Full summer courses include any courses that meet 10 or more weeks (including online courses that meet 10 or more weeks). You can find a complete list of deadlines here. The last day of Summer Session I courses will be June 30. Final examinations will begin on July 1 and end on July 2.

The Office of Academic Advising is open during our normal business hours over the summer and staff members are available to answer questions over the phone or via email. As a reminder, the Office of Academic Advising is open Monday, Wednesday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. You can reach us by phone at 336.758.3320, or via email at undergraduateadvising@wfu.edu.

From the Office of The University Registrar::

  • Diplomas for the Class of 2021 have been mailed. Your family should receive them soon if you have not yet already. We are also now offering digital diplomas. Recent graduates can share this with any social media platform and can also serve in place of the paper diploma in some cases. If there are any discrepancies or damages to the diploma or to check the status, please reach out to Candace Speaks at speakscr@wfu.edu.

The official date of Wake Forest degree conferral is always the third Monday in May (regardless of the Commencement Ceremony date). So even though the diploma ceremonies were held on May 16 this year, May 17 is the correct degree conferral date, not a misprint.

Events

We are wrapping up the University’s academic and fiscal year on June 30th and want to thank all the current, incoming, and past parents and families who have supported the Parents’ Campaign of the Wake Forest Fund. Feminist Book Club is open to students, staff, and faculty. If you think your Deac would be interested in joining this book club, please share this message with them; students can register here.

Resources

From Residence Life and Housing: we hope all are enjoying their summer break and finding ways to relax and recharge. This week is the initial round of Housing Selection alongside summer projects and preparation for the upcoming academic year. This month, we have final updates around selection, information as you begin to plan for move-in, and a part-time employment opportunity for any interested students. Read more.

From Student Financial Services:

  • Congratulations to the Class of 2021! For our students who have recently graduated, please be sure to check your DEAC account for any credit or outstanding balances. If you have a credit balance you would like refunded, please submit a Refund Request Form; if you have an outstanding balance on your account, please remit payment as soon as possible to clear your account.

We will begin billing for the fall 2021 semester on July 1st. Students, please be sure you have added your parent(s) or anyone you want to have access to your account as an Authorized Payer in DEAC so they receive the appropriate notifications and are granted permission to discuss the details of your student account.

Prepare for the unexpected and protect your investment in education by enrolling in the elective tuition insurance program through A.W.G. Dewar, Inc. This low-cost plan helps minimize the financial loss when a student must withdraw due to a serious illness or accident. Please see the Tuition Insurance page of our website for more information on how the Dewar Tuition Insurance assures up to a 75% tuition refund throughout the term.

From the Office of Sustainability: Join us in thanking and congratulating a group of student leaders who have left their mark on sustainability at Wake Forest. These ten members of the Class of 2021 have served as interns and assistants with the Office of Sustainability in areas as diverse as the Campus Garden, athletics, energy, waste, communications, and more. We’re excited to see the impact they’ll make in their post-Wake lives! Read their stories.

From Campus Recreation: Is your Deac looking for a way to stay involved in sports they’ve enjoyed growing up? They can apply to join the Intramurals staff by submitting an application! Your students can take the opportunity to join a team of enthusiastic, sports minded individuals that officiate and score-keep our sports programs. They can expect to gain an array of transferable skills, including critical thinking, conflict resolution, and oral communication!

Campus Safety

Wake Forest University Police:

  • We encourage students and families to use the summer to review crime prevention and safety tips, as well as emergency situations and how to respond. It is best to familiarize yourselves with these procedures before you need them, and bookmark these pages for later reference during the school year.
  • Parents and families can sign up to receive crime alerts on the Wake Ready website, in addition to downloading the LiveSafe app. While crime alerts are sent in real time to students, faculty and staff, they are not for others. For those registered through Wake Ready, crime alerts are emailed daily at noon, but only if new alerts have been posted in the previous 24 hours.

Any emails that are sent to students, faculty, and staff are archived on the Family News website.
