E-newsletter from the Office of Family Engagement

It’s July — which means it’s officially the new academic year 2021-2022. And we are excited to have our new president, Dr. Susan R. Wente, here on campus with us.

“I am eager to meet all of you and get started writing the next chapter of Wake Forest’s story,” President Wente said in a message to the University community. “It is a time of new beginnings. With a commitment to building further trust, transparency and teamwork, I look forward to forging our new beginnings together.”

We are just about a month away from the arrival of the Wake Forest Class of 2025! We are looking forward to welcoming our newest Deacs and their families for Move-in and Orientation — always a wonderfully exciting time in the life of our campus.

Here’s a few statistics from the Admissions office about the Class of 2025:

  • 14% are North Carolinians
  • 42 states are represented, plus Puerto Rico. The top 5 states represented (in order of incoming students) are North Carolina, New York, New Jersey, Florida, California
  • 10% are international students
  • 22 foreign countries are represented: Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Dominican Republic, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Oman, Pakistan, Peru, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, The Bahamas, Tunisia, Turkey, and the United Kingdom
  • 24% are domestic students of color
  • 9% are first generation college students
  • 8% are alumni children

The fall is just around the corner. We are eager to meet the Class of 2025, welcome our upperclass students back , and begin work with President Wente on our shared Wake Forest journey!

Go Deacs!

Upcoming Dates and Deadlines

July 1
July 1 was the deadline for new students (’25 and transfers) to submit their Health Information and Immunization Form (HIIF), and for all students to submit their COVID vaccine documentation. The Student Health Service tells me they are processing the HIIF and COVID vaccine uploads and emails as quickly as possible. Students are asked to please allow 7-10 business days before checking their Student Health Portal for receipt/acceptance of their documentation. If after that time their immunizations are not uploaded into their portal, students should send an email to HIIF@wfu.edu. The Student Health Service notes that sending or uploading duplicates will slow down the process for all students. If a student is missing any vaccines or information that the SHS must have, the student will be sent a secure message through the Student Health Portal.

Incoming Families of the Class of 2025

First-year students will receive their housing assignments the week of July 26th. Upon viewing their assignment, students will be able to select their move-in appointment from various times (9 am, 12 noon, and 3 p.m. EST) on August 18 or August 19. As a reminder, students who are accepted in a Pre-Orientation program or are a student-athlete who must report to school early will receive a move-in date directly from the Office of Residence Life and Housing.

Parent and Family Orientation: For travel planning purposes, we anticipate having parent and family programming on both Wednesday, August 18th, and Thursday, August 19th. You may attend whichever day you prefer, as the programs will cover the same material each day. Formal programming for families will end by Thursday evening, so families should plan to depart on Friday, as students will be involved in their own Orientation programming. In addition, we will release some brief videos later in July to help cover some key topics, such as the college transition, safety, campus involvement, and more. You will be able to view those at your leisure.

Project Wake: Wake Forest has a long tradition of engaging in a summer academic project on an issue of intellectual and social importance. The tradition includes setting aside time during New Deac Week for students to engage with a faculty or staff member on this issue. It is a favorite New Deac Week activity. For 2021, the Project Wake theme is “Re-:” To read more, or if your students want to register for Project Wake, click here. Students will need to log in using their Wake Forest University email to complete the registration form. If students are having issues accessing the registration page, it is possible that their browser cached their personal gmail account information and is trying to access the form as one of them. If your Deac is still receiving an error message after logging into their WFU gmail account, please contact the IT Help Desk at help@wfu.edu for further assistance.

Please be sure that you encourage your Deacs to check their WFU email, review Forestry 101, and the New Student website often throughout the summer to ensure that they are not missing important deadlines and details.

Incoming families should continue checking the calendar pages for July and August for upcoming dates and deadlines. It is important to check the website regularly; things may be added or updated. Continue to visit the New Students website for additional information on deadlines and to find resources to help you and your student prepare for the Fall 2021 semester. WakeWare, the student laptop program:

  • Back-to-school promotions have been announced! Anyone purchasing a WakeWare Apple on or after June 17 thru September 27 will get a pair of AirPods (with opportunities to upgrade). Anyone purchasing a WakeWare Lenovo from May 1 to September 1 will be entered to win a Lenovo branded YETI 20oz Tumbler Rambler.

Resources

From the Student Health Service: July 1 was the deadline for new students (’25 and transfers) to submit their Health Information and Immunization Form (HIIF), and for continuing students (i.e., ’22-’24s and graduate and professional students) to submit their COVID vaccine documentation.

From Residence Life and Housing: As we cross the ‘half-way’ point of summer and pivot towards the fall, we’re coming to you this month with reminders of important information you’ll need as you solidify your student’s plans for returning to campus. Additionally, we go over reminders about the second round of Housing Selection. Read more here.

From Student Financial Services:

  • We have billed for the fall 2021 semester as of July 1st; charges are now on the account for students and their Authorized Payers to review. Students, please be sure you have added your parent(s) or anyone you want to have access to your account as an Authorized Payer in DEAC. Fall semester tuition is due on August 1st.
  • Prepare for the unexpected and protect your investment in education by enrolling in the elective tuition insurance program through A.W.G. Dewar, Inc. This low-cost plan helps minimize the financial loss when a student must withdraw due to a serious illness or accident. Please see the Tuition Insurance page of our website for more information on how the Dewar Tuition Insurance assures up to a 75% tuition refund throughout the term.
  • For students intending to study abroad in fall 2021, WFU tuition/charges will be updated as programs are confirmed as operating. After the program status is confirmed, please view the DEAC current account view for billing updates, since no further bills will be generated before the August 1st due date.
  • Each student must choose to stay enrolled in or waive the Student Blue Insurance (health insurance premium) before August 31st. Please go to https://shi.wfu.edu/enrollment/ for additional information.

From the Office of Sustainability: Now in its third year, the Sustainability Leadership Group (SLG) is an opportunity designed specifically for sustainability-minded first-year students to gain leadership experience early on in their Wake Forest careers. SLG’s mission is to infuse a culture of sustainability throughout the Class of ’25 and cultivate it through leadership development, education, and community building. Click here to learn more, including how to apply.

From the Office of Personal and Career Development: Students who are looking to get a jump on fall recruiting for jobs and internships should take these 3 steps:

  • 1. Meet with a career coach now during the summer to get your resume updated, elevator pitch and personal branding perfected.
  • 2. Sign up for a career pathway to stay up-to-date on key information, resources and opportunities for select industries.
  • 3. Save the date for some of our larger recruiting events. Recruiting will be a hybrid of virtual and in-person this year:
    • Fall Career Fair: Sept 15 (virtual)
    • Consulting Networking Nights: Sept. 21 (in-person) and Sept. 22 (virtual)
    • Financial Services Networking Nights: Sept. 22 (virtual) and Sept. 23 (in-person)
    • STEM/Analytics Networking Night: Oct. 12 (virtual)
    • Nonprofit Networking Night: Oct. 19 (in-person)
    • Graduate & Professional School Fair: Oct. 27 (virtual)
    • Law School Fair: Nov. 3 (virtual)
  • Do you or your organization have hiring needs? To recruit WFU students, contact Stuart Mease — Director of Employer Relations.

From Campus Recreation: As we look to the fall semester, we want to make sure all Deac families are aware of the many opportunities offered by the Wellbeing Center. Did you know the Wellbeing Center includes 18,500 square feet of cardio and weight equipment on 4 floors, and nearly 100 pieces of cardio equipment with integrated technology? Or that it offers a pool, intramural and club sports, massage and aromatherapy, outdoor pursuits, group exercise classes, and much more? See all the ways the Wellbeing Center is here for your students.

Campus Safety

Wake Forest University Police:

  • We are very excited to see our students and families on campus this Fall. Earlier this year, a recruitment proposal was written to encourage internal promotion by sending security officers to Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET). This proposal was approved and WFUPD sent two Security Guards Robert Myers and Steven Schwartz. We are proud to announce they have completed their training and are joining our sworn law enforcement staff this summer.
  • We encourage parents and families to sign up to receive crime alerts on the Wake Ready website, in addition to downloading the LiveSafe app. While crime alerts are sent in real time to students, faculty and staff, they are not for others. For those registered through Wake Ready, crime alerts are emailed daily at noon, but only if new alerts have been posted in the previous 24 hours.

Any emails that are sent to students, faculty, and staff are archived on the Family News website.
