WakeParents & Families

E-newsletter from the Office of Family Engagement

This fall marks the 15th anniversary of the Campus Kitchen at Wake Forest University. Since 2006, Campus Kitchen has recovered over 560,000 pounds of food to make over 130,000 meals and engaged over 13,000 volunteers.

Each year, Campus Kitchen runs Turkeypalooza, which brings Wake Forest students, faculty, and staff together to celebrate the Thanksgiving season with our community partners who are working to reduce food insecurity in Winston-Salem. The Campus Kitchen volunteers cook over 400 Thanksgiving meals, including turkey, cranberry sauce, stuffing, green beans, sweet potato casserole, yeast rolls, and pumpkin cookies. In this season of thanks, we are grateful for this living example of our Pro Humanitate spirit and community partnerships.

Here are a few other news items we want families to know:

  • COVID-19 booster doses for students will be offered on campus November 30; additional appointments are expected to open on December 1 and December 2nd after the November 30th spaces fill; students can sign up here. Most students, because of our highly residential campus, are eligible for a booster dose as long as the length of time from your last dose meets the CDC criteria.
  • Hear from Dr. Chris Ohl, an infectious disease expert at the Wake Forest School of Medicine, about why students should get a booster shot.
  • Residence halls will close at 2 pm on December 12th for the Winter Break.

As we approach Thanksgiving, we are grateful every day for our talented students, devoted faculty and staff, and our beautiful campus. We are also thankful for our wonderful parents and families, stepparents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles (and abuelos, abuelas, and 爸爸 and 妈妈), and all the special people in our students' lives. No matter where home is for you - near or far - we are grateful to count you as part of our Wake Forest family!

Academics

From the Office of Academic Advising (OAA):

The Office of Academic Advising is now reviewing requests from students planning to seek permission to exceed the 17-credit hour limit for the spring semester. Students should write to their academic adviser and request a course overage by explaining the number of hours they wish to take, the class or classes they wish to add, and share their plan for academic success with the increased course load. If the adviser approves of the plan, the student should then forward the approval email to the Office of Academic Advising (undergraduateadvising@wfu.edu) along with the same details (total credit hours, class or classes, and academic plan for success).

Students planning to be part-time during the spring semester (less than 12 credit hours) should seek approval from the Office of Academic Advising as soon as possible.  While the deadline to make this change is in mid-January, it is financially advantageous to do so prior to the first day of class. Information on part-time status, and the application form, can be found here.

Do you have access to your student’s midterm and final grades?  If not, your student can provide you with proxy access (instructions here).  Keep in mind that, while all courses must be assigned final grades, some faculty members may choose not to submit midterm grades.

In observance of the Thanksgiving holiday, class will not be in session Wednesday through Sunday, November 24 – November 28. The last day of class for the Fall 2021 semester will be Friday, December 3.

The final exam period is scheduled for December 6 – December 11.  The final exam schedule may be found here.

From the Summer Session office: While you may be finalizing your Thanksgiving menus or travel plans, we are already hard at work planning for summer 2022. Just before Thanksgiving break begins, the Summer Session website will be updated with all of the information you need to begin considering how Summer Session might benefit you and your student. Registration for summer 2022 will open on March 14, leaving plenty of time to peruse our course list and identify classes that will meet each individual need. As you consider our offerings, please contact us with any questions that will help you and your student prepare.

Events

In honor of Native American Heritage Month, the Office of Sustainability has partnered with the Intercultural Center to develop our first series of Tohi Talks in the Tohi Garden. Tohi means wellness, unstressed, or peaceful in Cherokee. This wooded area along Wingate Road and behind Angelou Residence Hall has been transformed into a haven for native plants, especially those important to Cherokee peoples. Learn more about the Tohi Garden and our vision for Tohi Talks here.

From the Office of Civic and Community Engagement: The Office of Civic & Community Engagement is celebrating 15 years of the Campus Kitchen at Wake Forest on Friday, November 19 from 3-5 p.m. ET at the Campus Kitchen Lounge. The event is open to volunteers, alumni, campus and community partners, and supporters of the Kitchen. RSVP required to attend. It also marks the end of Turkeypalooza - when student volunteers come together to make 400 scratch-made turkey dinners for members of the Winston-Salem Community. Learn more about the Campus Kitchen at Wake Forest.

Resources

From the Student Health Service:

We have begun to see cases of influenza A on campus. The CDC has warned that there may be more cases of influenza this year and these cases may be more severe. Wake Forest has mandated that all students, faculty, and staff receive an influenza vaccine.  While the deadline for students to receive the vaccine is December 15, students are encouraged to get the vaccine as soon as possible to decrease their risk of influenza illness.

Fortunately cases of COVID-19 at Wake Forest are much lower compared to the fall of 2020; we have had about 1/4 the number of cases this year compared to last year. Students eligible for booster doses of the COVID-19 vaccine are encouraged to get this as soon as possible.  The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services has a simple tool to determine eligibility. Because of our highly residential campus, most of our students are eligible for a booster dose as long as the length of time from their last dose meets the CDC criteria. COVID-19 booster doses will be offered on campus for students November 30, December 1, and December 2. Students can sign up here for an appointment. Students can also obtain the vaccines at retail pharmacies (such as CVS and Walgreens), at local health departments, and at some private physician offices.

From the Center for Learning, Access, and Student Success (CLASS): “You Can Do This.... Strategies for Taking Final Exams” is the title of our December 1st OWLS event (Outreach Workshop Learning Series). Dr. Michael Shuman, director the Center for Learning, Access, and Student Success (CLASS),  will share strategies to help students prepare for final exams.  OWLS is offered in person Dec. 1st at 4 pm or virtually Dec. 2nd at 8pm. Students can find details on The Link and the Corq app.

From the  CARE Team: One of the many ways we care for our students is through the support and outreach of the Dean of Students Case Management Team. Case management support is available to community members with personal, medical, and mental health challenges and is offered in the spirit of care and compassion. We accept referrals for community members who may benefit from caring outreach, being heard, and getting connected with appropriate campus and community resources. The support available includes non-clinical case management, parental support as necessary, and connection and collaboration with campus and community resources. Read more about case management and ways to make a referral here.

From Residence Life and Housing: Hello Deacon parents and families! This will be our last time touching base before the majority of your students are back home with you for Winter Break. As your Deacs prepare to wind down the semester and leave campus, we’ve pulled together some reminders for you as you help them plan.

From Student Financial Services:

Billing for the spring 2022 semester began on November 1st; charges are now on the account for students and their Authorized Payers to review. Please be sure your student has added you (or anyone they want to have access to their account) as an Authorized Payer in DEAC. Spring semester tuition is due on December 1st.

Prepare for the unexpected and protect your investment in education. Registration is now underway for Dewar Tuition Refund Plan. This low-cost plan helps to minimize the financial loss when a student withdraws due to accident or illness. Learn more about the University’s Withdrawal/Course Drop Refund policy and how Tuition Insurance can assure up to 75% refund throughout the term. The last day to sign up for this plan is January 9, 2022.

Students should be on the lookout for a follow up email from SFS if they have not provided their Tax Identification Number (TIN) or Social Security Number (SSN) to Wake Forest. Please note: the W9-S form (attached in the email sent to your student) should be delivered to the appropriate Registrar’s Office as instructed; it should not be sent in via email. WFU is required to provide all students a complete 1098-T Tuition Tax Form each tax year, and the IRS requires that the TIN/SSN be included on this form.

From Campus Rec: Campus Recreation is excited to partner with a globally-recognized scuba certification program to provide the opportunity to become SSI Open Water Diver certified here on the Wake Forest campus. Personalized training is combined with in-water practice sessions to ensure your student has the skills and experience required to become truly comfortable underwater. This course includes all instruction, equipment rentals, certification fees, and checkout dives. All dates and times can be found at the website. Students can register for the course online, or at deaconrec.wfu.edu, and can email aquatics@wfu.edu if they have questions.

From Global Programs and Studies: Wake Forest is committed to making study abroad/away an integral educational opportunity for all of our undergraduates and to ensuring that students on all abroad programs (both WFU and Affiliate - i.e., non-WFU) receive the most comprehensive services from Wake Forest. Therefore, starting with the Fall 2022 semester, the University will implement a home school tuition approach in which students on Affiliate abroad/away programs will pay Wake Forest tuition, with housing and meal fees (if applicable) billed directly to the student by the Affiliate program. This home school tuition model, followed by a majority of our peer schools, will allow the University not only to continue providing institutional financial aid to students on Affiliate programs, but also to provide scholarships previously available exclusively to students on Wake Forest-sponsored programs. It will also provide resources to fully support all WFU students before, during, and after their abroad/away experience, whether on WFU or Affiliate programs.  Additional details can be found here.

Campus Safety

Wake Forest uses the Wake Alert system — voicemail, email, text message, website and web banners, and social media (Twitter, Facebook) — to notify faculty, staff and students when the University believes that members of the Wake Forest community could be at risk. Those messages are issued as soon as pertinent, vetted information is available. It may take time for authorities to investigate, verify and provide instructions or updates. Based on recent feedback, the University will communicate more extensively about incidents in the vicinity of campus for the sake of greater community awareness. Read more about recent University alerts.

Wake Forest University Police: We encourage parents and families to sign up to receive crime alerts on the Wake Ready website, in addition to downloading the LiveSafe app. While crime alerts are sent in real time to students, faculty and staff, they are not for others. For those registered through Wake Ready, crime alerts are emailed daily at noon, but only if new alerts have been posted in the previous 24 hours.

Any emails that are sent to students, faculty, and staff are archived on the Family News website.

Some staff members are working remotely, and some offices are working a reduced schedule. However, if you have an urgent need to reach someone at the university because you have a concern that must be addressed quickly, we have designated the University Police as our 24/7 contact. They can assess the situation and determine who best to address your concern. The 24-hour contact number for University Police is 336.758.5591 (non emergency) or 336.758.5911 (for the kinds of emergencies where you would normally call 911). University Police can get in touch with on-call duty staff 24-hours/day.
