WakeParents & Families

E-newsletter from the Office of Family Engagement

We were thrilled to have so many families join us for Family Weekend, October 1-3. We had great weather, a fantastic slate of events, and a big win at Truist Field. Go Deacs!

Some of you have asked when Family Weekend 2022 will be — we do not yet know. The date typically occurs on a home football weekend, and we won’t have the 2022 football schedule until late January or early February.

In other event news, Hit the Bricks, which raises money for the Brian Piccolo Cancer Research Fund, set new records for participants, the number of teams and total money raised. Runners and walkers circled Hearn Plaza for 22,789 laps, or just under 5,700 miles.

“It is truly an honor to experience one of Wake Forest’s finest traditions. Your gifts — the money you have raised, your support of those facing cancer and your commitment to seeing this through to a cure — are a remarkable testament to the spirit of Pro Humanitate that is alive on this campus,” said Wake Forest University President Susan R. Wente.

You can view photos of Hit the Bricks and learn more about the 1,693 runners on 146 teams who raised more than $200K for cancer research

There are a few other news items of note this month:

  • Students, faculty, and staff will be required to get a flu vaccine again this year. We have a free flu vaccine clinic for students on campus October 25-27.
  • Anna Brylin and Brooke Killingsworth made history as the first Demon Deacon doubles team to win an ITA All-Americans Championship
  • For alumni families, Homecoming will be held October 29-31. Registration for tailgate and game ticket packages closes on October 19. Registration for all other events closes at 9 a.m. ET on October 21.

Go Deacs!

    • The deadline to drop a second part-of-term course is October 29.
  • The schedule of Spring 2022 classes will be available starting October 15 and the advising period for Spring 2022 registration is October 18 - October 29. If students do not meet with their advisers, they will not get their PIN numbers and will not be able to register for Spring 2022 classes. Registration will take place November 2-8, at which point students can log into the registration portal during their assigned registration time and register using their PIN numbers.

Events

From the Office of Civic and Community Engagement:

  • Wake Forest University’s Office of Civic and Community Engagement and Deacs Decide is excited to present the 2021 Democracy Day on Saturday, November 6. This day-long conference seeks to engage participants in a variety of different areas that are crucial to this political moment, including voter enfranchisement, gerrymandering, running for office, and will ultimately empower participants to create and engage with change in their communities. The conference is free for Wake Forest students. Register to attend by October 29, 2021.
  • Project Pumpkin is back! Students can join in on the fun on Thursday, October 28, and help with the annual fall festival by registering a booth with their student organization, residence hall, or club sports team. In addition to providing a Halloween fall festival for local children, the student-led initiative helps raise money for the Freedom School at Wake Forest University. Each summer, Freedom School hosts third- through eighth-graders for a reading-based summer curriculum, and provides all children with free meals.

Partner with the School of Business — The Masters in Business Analytics (MSBA) program is looking for a corporate partner to sponsor a case competition scheduled for early Spring 2022. The case competition focuses on turning analytical findings into impactful business insights. Internal to the program, it is a marquee component of the student experience and a unique opportunity for students to apply methodology into practice. Contact Cherie Fu, Associate Director, MSBA, for more information.

For those with students interested in Fraternity and Sorority Life, it’s time to start talking about the process. Here are some important dates to keep in mind as you have these conversations: Panhellenic (sorority) recruitment registration will close on November 12th. The link is available here, along with other pertinent information about the process. Please note that all recruitment activities from January 4th to January 6th will be virtual and Potential New Members will move in on January 8th. More information about the structure of recruitment this year can be found on Panhellenic’s website. Fraternity recruitment will take place after classes begin in January; there will be meet-and-greet events in October and November and registration will open in late November (look for flyers). For students interested in National Pan-Hellenic Council recruitment, they should speak with Mr. Shane Taylor, Assistant Director of Fraternity & Sorority Life.

We are experimenting with a new potential offering: Zoom office hours for families. Register for Wake the Arts (2 p.m. Eastern on Tuesday 10/26), which will feature a short 10 minute presentation, then Q&A and discussion. Space is limited and preregistration is required. Because Office Hours will be Q&A based with the participants involved, we will not record these sessions. Registration will close when capacity is reached, or if we do not reach minimum participation levels.

Resources

From the Center for Learning, Access, and Student Success (CLASS): after 35 years of service, the LAC-DS (Learning Assistance Center and Disability Services) announced a name change effective October 1. Their new name is CLASS — The Center for Learning, Access, and Student Success. CLASS offers the same great services of academic coaching, peer tutoring, and disability services and is located in the same space, 118 Reynolda Hall. Their new name better describes their strengths-based mission to help each student achieve personal success. To learn more, visit the CLASS website.

From the CARE Team: Caring support and outreach for the Wake community is available through the Dean of Students Case Management Team. The team promotes a culture of care and compassion and accepts referrals from community members identifying other community members who may benefit from caring outreach, being heard, and getting connected with appropriate campus and community resources. Case management support is provided to community members with personal, medical, and mental health challenges. The support available includes non-clinical case management, parental support as necessary, and connection and collaboration with campus and community resources. Read more about case management and ways to make a referral here.

From Residence Life and Housing: As you’ve probably heard from your students as they work their way through midterms, we’ve just crossed over the half-way point of the Fall Semester. This time of year, we encourage students to begin thinking ahead to breaks and next semester. Read more in our October newsletter.

From Student Financial Services:

  • If your student has not provided their Tax Identification Number (TIN) or Social Security Number (SSN) to Wake Forest, they recently received an email from Student Financial Services prompting them to complete and submit the provided form. Please note: the W9-S form should be delivered to the appropriate Registrar’s Office as instructed, it should not be sent in via email. Wake Forest is required to provide all students a complete 1098-T Tuition Tax Form each tax year, and the IRS requires that the TIN/SSN be included on this form.
  • We will begin billing for the spring 2022 semester on November 1st. Families want to ensure their students have added them (or anyone they want to have access to their student account) as an Authorized Payer in DEAC so those payers can receive the appropriate notifications. Making families an authorized payer also gives Wake Forest permission to discuss the details of their student account.
  • Please ensure your student has signed up for Direct Deposit! Wake Forest encourages students to utilize direct deposit, as doing so provides students with a convenient and secure way to access their funds faster.

From Campus Rec: Give the gift of health! Birthdays, holidays, or anytime during the year, finding the perfect gift can be a challenge. What about giving the Gift of Health? The Campus Recreation personal training staff is here to assist your loved one begin or achieve a healthy lifestyle. We are committed to assist every client with next steps in healthy activity, fitness education, motivation, and support. Select one of our gift packages that are sure to fill their wellness wishlist that can last all year long! Contact Lori Tyson-Jamison at tysonln@wfu.edu for more information.

From the Office of the Chaplain: If your student is looking for ways to find calm and learn healthy approaches to managing stress, this Koru Mindfulness course may be something they’d benefit from. The four part series is free for students and covers the scientific reasons why mindfulness can be so powerful in our lives, as well as gives time for community practice and questions.

From the Office of Personal and Career Development (OPCD): Navigating the college-to-career path can produce anxiety and stress for students (and for families!). Please know that the Office of Personal and Career Development is here to help alleviate some of that anxiety through our expertly-trained staff, tools, employer and alumni connections, resources like Handshake, and more. Here are three things students should know:

  • We are here to help. Whether a student is a first-year or senior, seeking employment or grad school, knows what they want to do or has no idea, we are here to assist. Use our website for self-guided help or make an appointment with a career coach for 1:1 help.
  • There are opportunities. There are more career opportunities available to WFU students in Handshake than ever before. Students are encouraged to use this powerful tool to find internship and full-time opportunities.
  • Help us help you. Students with completed and updated career interests in Handshake are able to receive targeted messages from our office about career opportunities, events, resources and more. For example: If a student has indicated they are interested in full-time marketing roles in Boston, we can communicate opportunities that meet that criteria.

Campus Safety

Wake Forest uses the Wake Alert system — voicemail, email, text message, website and web banners, and social media (Twitter, Facebook) — to notify faculty, staff and students when the University believes that members of the Wake Forest community could be at risk. Those messages are issued as soon as pertinent, vetted information is available. It may take time for authorities to investigate, verify and provide instructions or updates. Based on recent feedback, the University will communicate more extensively about incidents in the vicinity of campus for the sake of greater community awareness. Read more about recent University alerts.

Wake Forest University Police: We encourage parents and families to sign up to receive crime alerts on the Wake Ready website, in addition to downloading the LiveSafe app. While crime alerts are sent in real time to students, faculty and staff, they are not for others. For those registered through Wake Ready, crime alerts are emailed daily at noon, but only if new alerts have been posted in the previous 24 hours.

Any emails that are sent to students, faculty, and staff are archived on the Family News website.
