WakeParents & Families

E-newsletter from the Office of Family Engagement

This is a big month for Wake Forest, as we celebrate the Inauguration of President Susan R. Wente. We hope parents and families will join us and watch the livestream at 3 p.m. on March 25th. There is also a full schedule of events in which your students can participate:

  • Face to Face: Radical Collaboration - Join us in Wait Chapel at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 24 as Larry Culp (P ’17, P ’19, P ’23), University Trustee and CEO of General Electric, and Gene Woods, CEO of Atrium Health, discuss radical collaboration in a moderated conversation with Marybeth Torbet Hays (’90, MBA ’94).
  • Student tickets for the Inauguration of President Wente - We invite students to attend the Inauguration Ceremony on Friday, March 25 at 3 p.m. in Wait Chapel. Students will need to pick up a ticket at the Hospitality Center in the Green Room of Reynolda Hall from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, March 24, and 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Friday, March 25. A limited number of tickets will be available on a first-come basis for students with a Wake Forest ID.
  • Inauguration Ball - Students can enjoy live music, drinks and hors d’oeuvres with their fellow Deacs on Friday, March 25, from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. Tickets are free, but must be requested in advance; details here.
  • See the full schedule of Inauguration events; students are encouraged to participate in campus community service projects, the community breakfast, and more.

We look forward to celebrating Dr. Wente’s inauguration — and to all the great work we will do together for the good of Wake Forest.

Go Deacs!

Incoming Families of the Class of 2026

Welcome, P’26s (families of newly-admitted students in the Class of 2026)! We are including you in this e-newsletter so you can begin to get a taste of how we connect with families. We encourage you to review our page for incoming families.

IMPORTANT NOTE: the details and deadlines in other sections of this e-newsletter only apply to currently-enrolled students (Classes of 2022-2025), not your incoming Deacs. More information will be available on May 2nd once our New Students website for the Class of 2026 goes live.

For any incoming P’26 families who had not already completed a Family Record Form, we have a new process to ensure your contact information is correct in our records system. Please see our Verify Your Family Record section of the Incoming Families page and verify your record as soon as you can. It is critical that we have correct contact information for your family (to reach you in an emergency, to send you important Wake Forest news, or to send information about Wake Forest events in your area).

If you have not already done so, please review our Family Communications Guidelines and Philosophy, so you understand how Wake Forest and families can best work together, and consider subscribing to the Daily Deac blog, which shares important news, offers advice about supporting your student, and covers a variety of WFU activities and events to help you get a sense of campus life.

From WakeWare, the Student Laptop Program - new academic year WakeWare models have been announced! WakeWare allows you to purchase a powerful recommended Apple or Microsoft Surface device to run robust academic software, has negotiated prices, provides a loaner laptop in case repairs are needed, and has built-in accidental damage and theft protection. For more information, visit the WakeWare website. As a reminder, in order to support a portable learning environment, every student is required to bring a laptop to campus. You can learn more about minimum computer requirements here.

Academics

From the Office of Academic Advising (OAA):

  • The advising period for Fall 2022 registration is underway and runs through Friday, March 25. During the advising period, students should be meeting with their academic advisers to discuss registration for Fall 2022 and receive a PIN number to access registration. Students who do not meet with their advisers to get their PIN number will not be able to register for Fall 2022 classes. Registration will take place March 28–April 8.
  • Second part-of-term classes began March 3. The deadline to drop a second part-of-term class is March 28.

Summer Session offers a wide variety of classes for students seeking to get ahead or catch up on needed credit hours. This year we are offering both in-person and online classes. The Summer Session website is your one stop shop for all undergraduate summer information. Registration for Summer Session will open in WIN on March 14 and will run through the beginning of Summer Session I until May 27. We also accept visiting college students from other universities and rising high school juniors and seniors, so spread the word to your family and friends! Please contact The Center for Global Programs and Studies if you are interested in summer abroad programs, as these may have different application and registration dates. For all other inquiries regarding summer classes at Wake Forest, contact us here.

From CLASS (Center for Learning, Access, and Student Success) - Students are invited to join the Center for Learning, Access, and Student Success at CLASS Cafe on Wednesday, March 30 from 3:30pm-5pm. CLASS Cafe is a pop up café with seasonal treats and fun conversation located in front of Reynolda Hall on Hearn Plaza. Drop by and stay for 5 minutes or 95 minutes, CLASS Cafe is an opportunity for students, faculty, and staff to celebrate spring together!

Events

From the Office of Civic and Community Engagement (OCCE):

  • Join us for Wake 'N Shake! - Families are welcome to be in the room for this year's Wake 'N Shake! As students participate in the 17th annual 12-hour dance marathon, get an exclusive look at the in-person event by tuning in online with Imaginate events. Throughout the virtual event, you'll have access to event highlights and the ability to interact with other members of the WFU community including alumni, parents and families, and more! Reserve your spot in the room, and join us online on March 19 from 8-10 p.m. ET.
  • Good wears black when we honor our Pro Humanitate motto. As part of the Inauguration festivities for President Susan R. Wente, the OCCE will be hosting service opportunities for the campus community on Wednesday, March 23. Students, faculty, staff, alumni, and guests are welcome to volunteer their time with various kit-packing parties throughout the day to benefit children, women, and families of the Winston-Salem community. Your students can register to volunteer here.

Parents and families can complete a Certificate in Integrated Marketing Strategy & Planning with Wake Forest Executive Education this spring! This certificate program is designed for professionals looking to develop relevant and immediately implementable skills across seven key competencies in marketing. Each half-day session will cover topics on marketing research, consumer behavior, marketing objectives, digital strategy, segmentation, targeting, and positioning, product/service, pricing, and distribution strategies and more. Each participant will complete a final Capstone project that serves as an immediately implementable marketing action plan. Reserve your seat today!

Resources

From Residence Life and Housing: This month, we want to lay out important dates for the remainder of the semester and go into some reminders for you around what your student is asked to do as they leave campus for the summer (or stay, for those who may be enrolling in summer courses). Read more.

From Student Financial Services:

  • On March 7, an email was sent to students and authorized payers notifying them of the $500 non-refundable tuition deposit required for all returning undergraduate students (i.e., ’23-’25). As a reminder, this deposit is due by March 31. You can learn more about the non-refundable tuition deposit on our website.
  • Don’t forget: your student’s 1098-T tax form is now available online. Please visit the Tax Information page on the Student Financial Services website for more information.

From the Office of Personal and Career Development (OPCD):

  • There are over 30,000 opportunities within Handshake, and the job market is very strong. Students still have time this spring to network with organizations. Employers use these events to identify seniors for immediate full-time openings and sophomore and junior students for the upcoming Fall ’22 recruitment season. Spring Career Readiness events include:
    • March 22: Virtual Consulting Networking Night, 6-8 p.m. - via Handshake
    • March 23: Virtual STEM/Analytics Networking Night, 6-8 p.m. - via Handshake
    • March 24: In-Person Financial Services Networking Night, 6-8 p.m. - Benson 401
    • March 24: Virtual Health Professions Fair for students interested in health and medical graduate programs, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. - via Handshake
    • March 29: Virtual Marketing Networking Night, 4-7 p.m. - via Handshake
    • April 6: Virtual SEC/ACC Career Fair, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. - information posted in Handshake but hosted via external site
  • As a reminder, the OPCD can help students NOW, and any time after graduation. Students who do not yet have job offers are encouraged to continue searching and applying for opportunities on Handshake and other job websites. Students can make an appointment with a career coach for assistance with the job search process.
  • For last year’s Class of 2021, 98.6% of graduates seeking a job or graduate school spot landed offers within 6 months of graduation — and we expect it to be similar this year.

Campus Safety

Wake Forest uses the Wake Alert system — voicemail, email, text message, website and web banners, and social media (Twitter, Facebook) — to notify faculty, staff and students when the University believes that members of the Wake Forest community could be at risk. Those messages are issued as soon as pertinent, vetted information is available. It may take time for authorities to investigate, verify and provide instructions or updates.
