E-newsletter from the Office of Family Engagement

Happy February! We have some updates to share on key event weekends this fall:

Family Weekend 2022 will be held the weekend of Oct. 7-9. Details about the weekend will not be available until later this spring, but mark your calendars now for a great weekend!

For our alumni families, Homecoming will be held the weekend of Sept. 16-18. There will be special events for alumni in reunion years (ending in 2s and 7s).

More information about Family Weekend and Homecoming will be available later this spring. For now, mark your calendars and start making your travel plans.

Finally, we want to offer a warm welcome to families in the Class of 2026, whose students were accepted during the Early Decision process and will begin at Wake Forest this fall. We are including you in this e-newsletter so you can begin to get a taste of how we connect with families, but please know you will get special communications starting in May with dates and deadlines pertaining to the Class of 2026. We look forward to getting to know you better over the next four years!

Incoming Families of the Class of 2026

Welcome, P’26s (families of newly-admitted students in the Class of 2026)! Through our Early Decision process, we have many new incoming families, and we welcome you to life at Wake Forest. We are including you in this e-newsletter so you can begin to get a taste of how we connect with families. If you have not already done so, please complete your Family Record Form, consider subscribing to the Daily Deac blog, and review our page for incoming families.

Please note that the details and deadlines in other sections of this e-newsletter only apply to currently-enrolled students (Classes of 2022-2025), not your incoming Deacs. More information will be available in May once our full Class of 2026 has been admitted.

In order to support a portable learning environment, every student is required to bring a laptop to campus. You can learn more about minimum computer requirements here. For those needing a new computer, WakeWare, the Student Laptop Program, allows you to purchase a powerful recommended laptop to work with academic software, has educational-based pricing (for greater discounts), provides a loaner laptop in case repairs are needed, and has built-in accidental damage protection. Upcoming Academic Year Models and pricing information will be available in early Spring. For more information, visit the WakeWare website.

Academics

From the Office of Academic Advising (OAA):

  • Please note that changes have been made to the Spring 2022 academic services calendar to account for lost instructional time due to the Weaver Fertilizer Plant fire. The calendar can be found here.
  • Students who have incomplete courses from the Fall 2021 semester (or the last semester of attendance) were required to submit missing work by Feb. 15. Grades for incomplete courses that are not completed by this date will roll to Fs. For work submitted by the deadline, instructors will grade the work and submit a final grade by March 2.
  • The last day to drop full term classes is 11:59 p.m. on Feb. 22; this is also the deadline to receive all permissions required to change full-term courses from graded to pass/fail mode if eligible.
  • The last day to change from pass/fail to a letter grade in an approved first part-of-term class is Feb. 24.
  • The last day of first part-of-term classes will be on March 2. Classes for second part-of-term will begin on March 3.

Summer Session offers a wide variety of classes for students seeking to get ahead or catch up on needed credit hours. This year we are offering both in-person and online classes. The Summer Session website is your one stop shop for all undergraduate summer information. Registration for Summer Session will open in WIN on March 14 and will run through the beginning of Summer Session I until May 27. We also accept visiting college students from other universities and rising high school juniors and seniors, so spread the word to your family and friends! Please contact The Center for Global Programs and Studies if you are interested in summer abroad programs, as these may have different application and registration dates. For all other inquiries regarding summer classes at Wake Forest, contact us here.

The Global Village Living & Learning Community is now accepting applications for the 2022-2023 academic year. Applications will be accepted through March 15th. The Global Village Living & Learning Community consists of globally-minded students from a broad spectrum of majors who reside together for a full academic year and commit to collaboratively explore a global theme through curricular and co-curricular activities. All rising Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors in good standing are eligible to apply. As a part of the Global Village, students enroll in a 1.5 credit hour course each semester and participate in regular social and co-curricular experiences. Direct any questions to Kim Snipes.

Events

Today, at 4 p.m. in Wait Chapel is Founders’ Day Convocation. This year’s program will include a student oration, musical performances, remembrances of those we have lost this past year and remarks from President Susan R. Wente. During this year’s ceremony, the Medallion of Merit — the highest honor bestowed by Wake Forest for service to the University — will be awarded to President Emeritus Nathan O. Hatch (LHD ’21). The ceremony will be livestreamed.

Resources

From the Office of Civic and Community Engagement:

  • Each year, students participate in Wake ’N Shake — a 12-hour dance marathon to raise money for the Brian Piccolo Cancer Research Fund. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, March 19, and will be held entirely in person for the first time since 2019. Any student can participate, and we’re looking for dancers! Students can register to participate, independently, or as part of a team.
  • Summer Opportunities with the OCCE: Each summer, the OCCE places full-time undergraduate students in paid internships with community partner sites to help enrich students' academic and vocational development and build capacity at local nonprofits. Interested students are seeking scholarly, professional, and personal development through intensive work in the nonprofit sector. Applications are accepted through March 6. Students can learn more and apply today. Additional opportunities for students are also available with the Wake Forest Freedom School. Applications for Freedom School SLI's will be open through March 15. All students receive an education award at the completion of their service.
  • The Civic Scholars program recognizes Wake Forest students whose work in the campus and Winston-Salem community is both deep and broad. Scholars participate in workshops while completing work in academics, direct service and leadership development. Graduating seniors must declare their intent by March 2.

From Residence Life and Housing: In this month’s newsletter, we’re going over how we handle fire alarm concerns, the shift in this year’s closing date to accommodate the new final exam schedule, reminders for Housing Selection next month and a first look at next year’s (2022-2023) opening and closing dates. Read more.

From Student Financial Services:

  • Returning Student Tuition Deposits for Fall 2022 are coming up. An email notification will be sent out on March 1st to all returning (i.e., not new '26) undergraduate students and their Authorized Payers (added in DEAC) with instructions for paying this deposit. The due date for tuition deposits is March 31, 2022.
  • Need a copy of your student’s 1098-T tax form? Students can elect to receive their tax forms electronically and grant proxy access to parents or tax preparers via WIN. For more information, please visit the Tax Information page on the Student Financial Services website.

From the Office of Personal and Career Development (OPCD):

Spring Career Readiness Events - In March, students should attend the following upcoming events to network with employers who have current job and internship hiring needs. Employers also use these events to identify talent for their upcoming Fall ’22 recruitment season, so interested sophomore and junior students should not miss these important opportunities to increase their odds for career success next year.

  • March 22: Virtual Consulting Networking Night, 6-8 p.m. - via Handshake
  • March 23: Virtual STEM/Analytics Networking Night, 6-8 p.m. - via Handshake system
  • March 24: In-Person Financial Services Networking Night, 6-8 p.m. - Benson 401

Also, on March 24 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., students interested in health and medical graduate programs should attend the Virtual Health Professions Fair, which they can register and participate in via the Handshake system.

Internship and Professional Development Funds — For students with identified financial need, they can apply for Professional Development stipend awards of up to $300. This award can be used to purchase a professional wardrobe and necessary job search materials like cards or stationery. They can also apply for Experiential Learning stipend awards of $3,000 to offset expenses associated with the acceptance of an unpaid internship in the summer. Experiential Learning stipend recipients also receive a WFU padfolio. The application process is ongoing and reviewed on the 15th and 30th of each month.

Campus Safety

Wake Forest uses the Wake Alert system — voicemail, email, text message, website and web banners, and social media (Twitter, Facebook) — to notify faculty, staff and students when the University believes that members of the Wake Forest community could be at risk. Those messages are issued as soon as pertinent, vetted information is available. It may take time for authorities to investigate, verify and provide instructions or updates. Based on recent feedback, the University will communicate more extensively about incidents in the vicinity of campus for the sake of greater community awareness. Read more about recent University alerts.

We encourage parents and families to sign up to receive crime alerts on the Wake Ready website, in addition to downloading the LiveSafe app. While crime alerts are sent in real time to students, faculty and staff, they are not for others. For those registered through Wake Ready, crime alerts are emailed daily at noon, but only if new alerts have been posted in the previous 24 hours.

Any emails that are sent to students, faculty, and staff are archived on the Family News website.

A message about how we disseminate campus news to parents and families: Any emails that are sent to students, faculty, and staff will be posted on the Family News page.  Those are not routinely emailed to all families.  If you wish to check for family news items often, you may wish to bookmark that page so it is easily available.

Some staff members are working remotely, and some offices are working a reduced schedule. However, if you have an urgent need to reach someone at the university because you have a concern that must be addressed quickly, we have designated the University Police as our 24/7 contact. They can assess the situation and determine who best to address your concern. The 24-hour contact number for University Police is 336.758.5591 (non emergency) or 336.758.5911 (for the kinds of emergencies where you would normally call 911). University Police can get in touch with on-call duty staff 24-hours/day.
