WakeParents & Families

E-newsletter from the Office of Family Engagement

Hearn Plaza and Wait Chapel

We are now at the end of the semester — at long last. An important message went out to students and families today about the pre-arrival requirements for the spring semester:

There are four key requirements to prepare for undergraduate students’ return to campus:

  • Complete the pre-arrival testing process
  • Self-quarantine and monitor for symptoms for 14 days prior to accessing campus
  • Return to using the SneezSafe tool for daily symptom screening for 14 days prior to accessing campus
  • Provide flu vaccination documentation in the Student Health Portal

We encourage students and families to read this message carefully. Students will continue to receive periodic messages about these pre-arrival requirements between late December and January, so urge them to check their WFU email daily and act promptly on any important requirements.

As we look to this long winter break, here are some thoughts for your family:

  • I hope your Deacs did well on their finals and feel a sense of accomplishment for all they have achieved this semester.
  • May they have time to reflect, relax, and renew their spirits.
  • I hope that your family has many good times, filled with laughter, good food, and sharing of memories and family stories - even if it looks like a different kind of celebration this year.
  • May you all stay healthy and safe. That matters most of all.

Our staff and faculty are winding down and getting ready for our winter break, too. As such, the Call Center (336-758-7500) will operate from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Eastern on weekdays through December 23. Then Wake Forest offices (and the Call Center) will be closed from December 24-January 3 and will reopen on January 4. See our After Hours page for contact information if you have an urgent need that cannot wait until we reopen.

On behalf of all of us at Wake Forest, we wish you the happiest of holidays!

Betsy Chapman, Ph.D. ('92, MA '94)
Executive Director of Family Communications

From the School of Business: Senior mathematical business students are required to work on a real project their last semester, and we are looking for a few more projects. Organizations would provide a brief problem statement that our students can address, using tools they’ve learned in previous statistics, management science, and other business courses. Dr. Alireza Lari would work with the organization to finalize the problem description, objectives, review the data that is available, and outline tentative deliverables. With guidance from Dr. Lari, students work in teams to deliver a suggested solution. If you are interested or would like to learn more, please contact Dr. Alireza Lari by December 31 at laria@wfu.edu.

From the Liberal Arts Studies MAAs you look toward graduation, are you sure that you’ve considered all your options? Did you know that you can earn an advanced degree in just one more year at Wake Forest? The Liberal Arts Studies MA can fill in the soft skills that employers are looking for and can give you the edge when it comes to getting started in your career. Applications are available for Summer and Fall 2021 at our website.

Resources

From Student Financial Services:

  • Billing for the Spring 2021 semester began on December 1. Spring tuition is due January 1, 2021. Please ensure your student has established you as an authorized payer in DEAC so you will be notified via email each time a statement is available. Please visit the SFS website for more information.
  • Each year by January 31, Wake Forest makes available an IRS Form 1098-T to all students who had qualified tuition and other related educational expenses billed to them during the previous calendar year. Current students can consent to receive this form electronically and provide proxy access for third parties to view online. For more information and the Form 1098-T, please visit the Tax Information page.
  • We are making plans with the intent to minimize major disruptions to the semester; however, that is not something we can guarantee. If conditions require closure of campus, refunds, if applicable, will be issued in accordance with the University Disruption Refund Policy. Refunds are only applicable to housing, dining plans and wellness and parking fees. Tuition will not be refunded if disruptions occur as courses are being designed for online delivery regardless of the conditions or location.

From the Student Health Service — According to the CDC, the safest way to celebrate winter holidays is to celebrate at home with the people you live with. Staying home is the best way to protect yourself and others. For students currently in Winston-Salem and planning to travel home, the CDC has released guidelines about domestic travel during the pandemic, and when to delay traveling.

Some staff members are working remotely, and some offices are working a reduced schedule. However, if you have an urgent need to reach someone at the university because you have a concern that must be addressed quickly, we have designated the University Police as our 24/7 contact. They can assess the situation and determine who best to address your concern. The 24-hour contact number for University Police is 336.758.5591 (non emergency) or 336.758.5911 (for the kinds of emergencies where you would normally call 911). University Police can get in touch with on-call duty staff 24-hours/day.
