WakeParents & Families

E-newsletter from the Office of Family Engagement

Reynolda Campus

The daffodils aren’t the only thing that’s Yellow! We are back to Yellow Operating Status as of March 12th, and it is wonderful.

We received news about Commencement for the Class of 2021: we will hold multiple smaller ceremonies for the undergraduate Class of 2021 to allow individuals to be recognized by name in front of families and guests, and we anticipate a large, celebratory event for undergraduates at Truist Field. Currently, we anticipate being able to accommodate two guests per graduate at each ceremony and celebration. We will share details regarding dates and times on Friday, March 19, to help with planning, and then additional details will be shared as they become available.

Finally, the COVID vaccine is on everyone’s mind. Here’s important information from our Student Health Service:

  • Wake Forest University is working closely with the State of North Carolina and local healthcare organizations to provide the COVID-19 vaccine to faculty, staff, and students. On campus vaccine clinics began on March 8 and will continue through the spring. The vaccine is administered based upon eligibility criteria established by the state.
  • Currently students who are frontline workers and students, faculty, and staff with underlying medical problems (e.g., asthma, obesity, hypertension, cardiac disease, cancer, etc.) are eligible for the vaccine; many have already received the vaccine through on campus clinics. It is anticipated that students without chronic medical problems living in residence halls will be eligible to receive the vaccine by mid-April. Students will be notified of the opportunity to receive the vaccine on campus as the state expands the eligibility criteria. This notification will include information on how to schedule an appointment for the vaccine. Appointments are through the vaccination program and not through the Student Health Service.
  • Please encourage your student to get the vaccine as soon as they are eligible to receive it. All three of the currently available vaccines are excellent options for protecting against COVID-19 and for protecting against the potential of serious illness, hospitalization, and death from the virus. The allocation of the vaccine is controlled by the state, so the University will not be able to choose which vaccine is available on any given day. There is no cost to receive the vaccine on campus. The availability of the vaccine on campus should help to decrease barriers for obtaining the vaccine. However, students are encouraged to get the vaccine wherever it is available. Parents and family members should also get the vaccine as soon as eligible.

Between the campus move to Yellow, in-person Commencement, the availability of the vaccine, and Spring flowers blooming, things are feeling so much more hopeful. I hope you feel it too.

Go Deacs!

Please note that the details and deadlines in other sections of this e-newsletter only apply to currently-enrolled students (Classes of 2021-2024), not your incoming Deacs.

WakeWare, the Student Laptop Program, allows you to purchase a high-powered laptop to work with all academic software, has educational-based pricing (for greater discounts), provides a loaner laptop in case repairs are needed, and has built-in accidental damage protection. Upcoming Academic Year Models and pricing information will be available in early Spring. We encourage incoming students to wait until mid-summer to make their purchase in order to take advantage of potential back-to-school promotions and new model announcements. For more information, visit the WakeWare website.

Academics

From the Office of Academic Advising (OAA):

  • The advising period for Fall 2021 registration has not been finalized. Dates will be published on our website once announced. During the advising period, students should be meeting with their academic advisers to discuss registration for Fall 2021 and receive a PIN number to access registration. Students who do not meet with their advisers to get their PIN number will not be able to register for Fall 2021 classes. Registration dates will be announced soon.
  • Registration for summer classes runs March 15 - May 27. Find out more about WFU summer school.
  • Second part-of-term classes begin March 18. The last day to add a second part-of-term course is March 24. The last day to drop a second part-of-term course/change a second part-of-term course from grade mode to pass/fail is April 5. Please be mindful of theses deadlines.
  • The last day to drop with a grade of "W" is March 30.
  • The last day to change from pass/fail to a letter grade in an approved full-term course is April 16.

From the Business School:

  • Students must meet a prerequisite requirement of a Wake Forest cumulative 2.85 GPA and sophomore standing (25 or more credits) to be eligible to take ACC 111 (Accounting). For Fall 2021 online registration, if a student feels he/she may not have this GPA by the end of the spring semester, we suggest that the student not register for the class during online registration. If a student does not register for ACC 111 but ends up with the 2.85 GPA at the end of the term, the School of Business will enroll them in a section of ACC 111 once they have confirmation of the Spring 2021 GPA.
  • Students who feel they may not meet the prerequisite GPA should email Whitney Milhouse (milhouw@wfu.edu). Ms. Milhouse will keep a list of these students and, at the end of spring semester, will enroll those students who meet the prerequisite requirement. If, however, a student elects to register for ACC 111 during online registration and does not meet the minimum GPA after spring semester, he/she will be dropped from the class.

Summer Session offers a wide variety of classes for students seeking to get ahead or catch up on needed credit hours. We are offering courses in all modalities so your student can stay connected with Wake Forest regardless of where they are living during the summer. The Summer Session website is your one stop shop for all undergraduate summer information. Registration for Summer Session opened on March 15 and will run through the beginning of Summer Session I until May 27. We also accept visiting college students from other universities and rising high school juniors and seniors, so spread the word to your family and friends! For all inquiries regarding undergraduate summer classes at Wake Forest, contact us here.

The Global Village Living & Learning Community is now accepting applications for the 2021-2022 academic year. Applications will be accepted through April 11. The Global Village LLC consists of globally-minded students from a broad spectrum of majors who reside together for a full academic year and explore a global theme through curricular and co-curricular activities. This is an intentional community focused on cultivating social, cultural, and intellectual development and fostering engagement with the broader Wake Forest community. All rising Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors in good standing are eligible to apply. As a part of the Global Village, students enroll in a 1.5 credit hour course each semester and participate in regular social and co-curricular experiences. Please direct any questions to Kim Snipes.

From Wake The Arts: Wake Forest students take Hackathon first prize: It’s not often that you see Art History, Anthropology, Computer Science, and Law teaming up to innovate a cutting-edge project together, but blockchain technology brought together these unlikely partners in a concentrated weekend of coffee-fueled experimental coding. Susan de Menil, renowned cultural heritage expert and Wake Forest parent, and Anne Bracegirdle, a thought leader in the realm of art and blockchain who has worked extensively with Christie’s auction house were integral to this mind-boggling project that could change our future. Events

The Office of Alumni Engagement is hosting Wake Women’s Week and invites Wake women to join us for Closing the Gender Gap: A Panel Discussion with Industry Leaders on Thursday, March 25 from 6-7:30 p.m. EST. Hear from fellow Wake Forest women representing various career paths and industries (including pro sports, ESPN, law and medical schools, the military, and finance), as they discuss their experiences as leaders in industries and organizations in which women have historically been underrepresented in leadership and senior positions. Read about the speakers and register here.

Art for impact: Students purchase works for WFU to reflect the times —The famous student art purchasing trip to New York looks a little different this year, in some ways expanding its own possibilities. Every four years since 1963, a small group of students has traveled to New York City, with University funds, to purchase art for Wake Forest’s Student Union Art Collection — works that reflect the times. This year was different.

Each year, students participate in Wake ’N Shake - a 12-hour dance marathon to raise money for the Brian Piccolo Cancer Research Fund. This year’s event has been re-imagined with a mix of virtual and in-person events from Monday, March 22 - Saturday, March 27. Any student can participate, and we’re looking for dancers! Students can register to participate, independently, or as part of a team. Learn more about this year’s event, and the great work being done for the Brian Piccolo Cancer Research Fund.

From the Office of Sustainability: Wake Forest’s annual Earth Month celebration is here! Organized by the Office of Sustainability with support from campus partners, this month-long celebration of the Earth focuses on connectedness, community, and empowerment. Opportunities abound, including group banner painting, student-led Earth Talks, “meeting the trees” on Arbor Day, esteemed speakers, movies nights, daily sessions in the Campus Garden, and much more! From the Office of Personal and Career Development:

  • Increase in postings — We are seeing an increase in job and internship postings and we’d like you to encourage your students to follow the steps on the following pages for applying to employment opportunities. Steps for finding an internship — or — Steps for finding a full-time job.
  • There is help available! Students don’t need to navigate the college-to-career process alone. One-on-One career coaching appointments are available and can be scheduled here. Group appointments are also available here.
  • Is your organization currently hiring entry level talent or looking for summer interns? If so, please reach out to Lori Sykes, Sr. Associate Director of Employer Relations, sykeslh@wfu.edu to share more information or make a connection to your recruiting team. Our students are actively seeking opportunities and would greatly appreciate your support.

Interested students can email Laura Denlinger at denlinlc@wfu.edu for the Zoom link.
  • We continue offering virtual academic coaching for all students, at no cost. Students can meet with a coach to talk about time management, test anxiety, study strategies, and many other topics related to academic success. If students have questions, they can email our office at lacds@wfu.edu
  • We remind families that we offer 1-on-1 tutoring appointments as well as drop in tutoring in a variety of courses, both at no cost. Information about scheduling an appointment or joining a drop in session can be found on our website.
