WakeParents & Families

E-newsletter from the Office of Family Engagement

Family Weekend is coming in just a few short weeks! Oct. 1-3, we will welcome Wake Forest families to campus for a weekend of terrific events. Online ticket and t-shirt sales will close Sept. 19 at 11:59 p.m., so register quickly. Please read this important Family Weekend information in advance of the weekend, as it contains information about how to pick up your registration packet, parking for the weekend, football tickets, and public health guidelines. The Daily Deac will share additional information about the weekend once kickoff has been announced for the football game (usually 10 days before the game).

President Wente has visited a variety of classrooms and spent time with students at the Hanes Art Gallery and the Charlotte Center. Read more about how Dr. Wente has gotten a student’s view of the academic experience.

There are several other news items of note this month:

Finally, we are thrilled to welcome back the Class of 2020 this weekend to — belatedly — celebrate them for Commencement.

Go Deacs!

  • New Deac 101 — Module 2 is NOW AVAILABLE! New students are expected to complete Module II by Sept. 27. Please have your student visit canvas.wfu.edu and log in with their student credentials (i.e., their WFU email username and password). • Sept. 29 is the Major/Minor Fair. Please encourage your student to attend from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in Benson Room 401.
  • Academic Counselors are available Monday-Friday from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. for brief, walk-in appointments with students in 125 Reynolda Hall. If your student is hoping to schedule an academic planning appointment before the next round of registration in early November, please have them stop by or call 336-758-3320 to request an appointment. Our calendars fill with planning appointments very quickly, so please encourage your student to schedule that appointment sooner rather than later!
  • Visit our website, like us on Facebook, and follow us on Twitter for updates and other important information!

From the Center for Global Programs & Studies:

  • Fall Study Abroad Fair — students can explore semester, summer and short-term study abroad opportunities at the study abroad fair held Tuesday Sept. 21 from 12:00-4:30 in Benson 401. Students can speak with faculty leading study abroad programs, study abroad advisors, and our affiliate partners.
  • Spring 2022 Study Abroad Applications — students who are planning on studying abroad for spring 2022 should be completing their applications now. Scholarships are available for all programs!
  • Global AWAKEnings is Wake Forest University’s first-year abroad program designed specifically for globally-minded and intellectually curious students who seek to challenge preconceived ideas of the world through an engaging academic experience in Copenhagen, Denmark. Applications are now open for our 2022-23 cohort.

Events

We are experimenting with a new potential offering: Zoom office hours for families. For students, Office Hours are times when their faculty are in their offices waiting for students to drop in with questions. It’s an informal meeting that allows students to make connections, ask questions, etc. Zoom office hours will feature a short 10 minute presentation on the office or department, Q&A and discussion. Space is limited and preregistration is required. Register for ZSR Library (6 p.m. Eastern on Tuesday 9/21), Office of Wellbeing (4 p.m. Eastern on Wednesday 9/22), and Wake the Arts (2 p.m. Eastern on Tuesday 10/26). Because Office Hours will be Q&A based with the participants involved, we will not record these sessions. Registration will close when capacity is reached.

From the Office of Civic and Community Engagement:

  • Hit the Bricks is coming! — A tradition like no other, each year the Wake Forest community comes together in the fight against cancer, running and walking laps for the day to raise money for the Brian Piccolo Cancer Research Fund. This year's event will take place on Thursday, September 30. Read more about Hit the Bricks in the Daily Deac.
  • BRANCHES Social Justice Retreat - is your student interested in social justice and advocacy, and looking for plans for Fall Break? Look no further than this free, student-led, weekend-long retreat in Black Mountain, NC, organized and run by the OCCE. Students will build community with their peers, all while learning how to be a champion for social change both on and off-campus. Applications for BRANCHES are due by Monday, Sept. 20.
  • Virtual Tutoring - Do you have a student looking to make a difference but they don't know where to start? Virtual Tutoring is a great opportunity to positively impact our community. For one hour each week, WFU students are paired with a local K-12 student that matches their tutoring preferences like area of study, and/or grade level. All sessions are held virtually, allowing students to participate safely from wherever they are. Applications are ongoing until all tutees are matched with a WFU student.

From the Office of Wellbeing: Would your student want to help their fellow Deacs improve their wellbeing while making a positive difference on campus? Students can become nationally-certified peer educators through the P.E.E.R.S. Network! Students can learn more and apply here: (applications due by Sept. 30 at 9 p.m. ). This is a great way for interested students to meet other potential friends and broaden their campus involvement!

Resources

New for Fall 2021, the Wake Escape Shuttle will run to popular entertaining and dining spots in Winston-Salem near the Hanes Mall area. This special Wake Line bus will operate on Friday and Saturday nights (excluding holidays) from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. The one-hour loop includes three stops and begins and ends at the Benson University Center circle.

From the Student Health Service: Student Health Service and Wake Forest BestHealth will host a COVID-19 vaccine clinic on campus on Monday, Sept. 20, for anyone in the Wake Forest community who needs a Pfizer vaccine. The clinic will run from 9 a.m.- 12:15 p.m. in the Sutton Center on campus. Students must make an appointment. For students who need a second dose of the Moderna vaccine, or students whose second dose of Pfizer or Moderna is due after these clinics, v accination opportunities are available with Forsyth County Public Health Department, Wake Forest Baptist Health, Novant Health, Walgreens, CVS and other sources.

From Residence Life and Housing: Fall in the Forest is officially underway! This month’s newsletter catches you up on information your student has received from us since coming to campus, provides tips for supporting your students as they navigate roommate dynamics, and offers some suggestions to pass along to #WFU25 for those of you with new Deacs. Read more.

From Student Financial Services:

  • Your Deacs should be on the lookout for an email from Student Financial Services in the next couple of weeks if they haven’t provided their Tax Identification Number (TIN) or Social Security Number (SSN) to WFU. We are required to provide all students a complete 1098-T Tuition Tax Form each tax year, and the IRS requires that the TIN/SSN be included on this form
  • If your student hasn’t already done so, encourage them to Sign up for Direct Deposit! Wake Forest encourages students to utilize direct deposit, as doing so provides students with a convenient and secure way to access their funds faster.

From the Office of Personal and Career Development (OPCD):

  • Recruiting season is upon us and students looking for full-time employment or internships should be active now in their search! Handshake is the optimal spot to register for OPCD events (like networking nights for consulting, finance, and marketing) and apply to some of the thousands of career opportunities that are currently available to Wake students.
  • All students should keep their Handshake profiles up-to-date with their experiences and preferences. This provides them the best experience while navigating their college-to-career journey. Students are encouraged to use our office resources for help! One-on-one career coaching appointments are available, as well as group sessions, and our website is always available for guidance.

From the School of Business: the Masters in Management Graduate Consulting Projects: Do you have a business problem for a group of graduate students to tackle? Submit a project to the Master’s in Management program, and we’ll match you with a group of creative, solution-oriented business graduate students. Graduate Consulting Projects are an integral part of the Master of Science in Management (MSM) program. Designed to provide students with a world-class experiential learning opportunity, these projects give organizations the benefit of fresh ideas and solutions in business. We could use a few more projects! Contact Angie Lynde, Assistant Director, Experiential Learning, to learn more.

Campus Safety

Wake Forest uses the Wake Alert system — voicemail, email, text message, website and web banners, and social media (Twitter, Facebook) — to notify faculty, staff and students when the University believes that members of the Wake Forest community could be at risk. Those messages are issued as soon as pertinent, vetted information is available. It may take time for authorities to investigate, verify and provide instructions or updates. Based on recent feedback, the University will communicate more extensively about incidents in the vicinity of campus for the sake of greater community awareness. Read more about recent University alerts.

Wake Forest University Police:

  • We encourage parents and families to sign up to receive crime alerts on the Wake Ready website, in addition to downloading the LiveSafe app. While crime alerts are sent in real time to students, faculty and staff, they are not for others. For those registered through Wake Ready, crime alerts are emailed daily at noon, but only if new alerts have been posted in the previous 24 hours.
  • Any emails that are sent to students, faculty, and staff are archived on the Family News website.
