In today’s global economy, organizations are continuously becoming more diverse. This broadening diversification of organization members includes cultural backgrounds, ethnicities, age, gender, and sexual orientation. Thus, it is imperative people managers understand how to effectively lead individuals who are different from them. Leaders who can bring an array of diverse individuals together and form a cohesive team aligned on common goals, purpose, and values will gain a competitive advantage.

This 1-day program provides participants with the knowledge and tools to understand and effectively lead people who are different from them. Participants also gain insights into how to shape the team’s or organization’s culture to create an environment that is authentic and brings out the best in everyone.

During this workshop, participants will immediately apply insight and tools in developing a personal leadership plan resulting in:

  • Understanding the importance of emotional intelligence in leading others who are different
  • The ability to use social perception to accurately access others while reducing potential biases
  • Understanding how to reduce prejudice in teams
  • The ability to earn the trust of and apply various leadership styles to effectively lead people who are different from you
  • Understanding the nature of the various areas of diversity: culture, gender, sexual orientation, and age

Certificate in Leadership

Leading People Who Are Different From You is one of seven open enrollment leadership programs. Programs are presented on a rotating basis throughout the year with completion of four programs resulting in a Certificate in Leadership from Wake Forest Executive Education and the School of Business’ Allegacy Center for Leadership and Character. Interested participants are able to register for this program individually or combine it with 3 other programs in the series to earn the certificate.

Key Learnings

Current and emerging leaders will receive practical, insightful guidance and actionable tools on how to apply emotional intelligence to connect with diverse individuals, apply social perception concepts to identify and reduce biases, break down prejudices between groups, build trust with people from various backgrounds, apply various leadership styles to effectively lead an array of people, and shape a team/organization environment that is accepting to all.

Who Should Attend?

This program is designed for both new and experienced leaders wishing to enhance their ability to build and lead effective teams. Interested participants are encouraged to attend individually or in teams from their organizations.

    Schedule: 8:00am- 4:15pm

    • 8:00 – 8:20 Arrival and Breakfast
    • 8:20 – 8:30 Introductions and program overview
    • 8:30 – 10:00 Session 1 – Emotional intelligence, social perception, and prejudice, and reducing prejudice
    • 10:00 – 10:15 Break
    • 10:15 – 12:00 Session 2 – Trust, psychological safety, and an array of leadership styles
    • 12:00 – 12:30 Lunch
    • 12:30 – 2:00 Session 3 – Leading across cultures and genders
    • 2:00 – 2:15 Break
    • 2:30 – 4:00 Session 4 – Leading across sexual orientations and generations
    • 4:00 – 4:15 Review, group discussion, and program wrap-up

  • Cost

    The October 2024 program cost is $950 and includes materials, continental breakfast and lunch, and is due in full at time of registration.

  • Materials

    Course materials are included in the cost of tuition. Course materials will be distributed in paper format at the beginning of the workshop. Electronic materials can be provided upon request.

  • Refund and Cancellation Policies

    Program Cancellation

    This course is offered contingent upon sufficient enrollment. If a course must be cancelled, all registered participants will be notified at least five (5) calendar days before the course’s start date. All registered participants will receive a 100% tuition refund. No fees will be charged for cancelled courses.

     

    Individual Cancellation – Refund Policy

    Prospective participants who withdraw at least 10 days prior to the start of a course will receive a full refund of tuition paid.
