Demon Deacons Punch Ticket to NCAA Championships

5/10/2023 4:56:00 PM | Women's Golf

RALEIGH, N.C. - The No. 1 ranked Wake Forest women's golf team clinched a spot in the NCAA Championship field for the fifth consecutive year.

Wake Forest was one of just three teams to have an under-par round on the final day, with a one-under 287. First-place finisher Arizona went seven under and fourth-place finisher TCU went two under par.

Wake was second in scoring on par four and par five holes, going four under on the par fives. The team also had the second-most pars in the field with 191 to Arizona's 196. Graduate Emilia Migliaccio finished second in scoring on par fours, going four under. Senior Lauren Walsh was one of just six players in the 60-player field to record an eagle.

The Deacs were led by Migliaccio and junior Mimi Rhodes, who each registered final-round scores of three under par 69. Rhodes was first off the tee for the team this morning and started the day with a birdie putt on the par-five first hole. She followed up with another birdie on the third hole to make the turn two under on the day. After back-to-back bogeys to start the second nine holes, Rhodes birdied three of her final four holes to push the Deacs into solo-third and three strokes above the cut line.

Migliaccio also tallied two birdies on her first nine holes and made the turn at even par. She started the second nine with a birdie on the par-four 10th hole and went on to birdie three of her final six holes. Rhodes and Migliaccio each birdied the par-four 18th with 12 and 15-foot birdie putts.

This will be the Deacs fifth-straight appearance at NCAA Championships, highlighted by a runner-up finish in 2019, and the 19th appearance for the program since 1993.

Coach's Comments
"We are very proud of this team. There were some tough conditions the first two days and our scores reflected that on the first day. It wasn't our best round, and we had some work to do, but we made a few adjustments and came out and executed when we needed to. We were on the cut line today and went six under on the last four holes. This is always a stressful week and there are so many deserving teams, but we are glad we came out on the right side of the line.

Thank you to Lonnie Poole Golf Course and NC State for hosting us, we had a tremendous week and are looking forward to Nationals next week. Go Deacs!" - head coach Kim Lewellen
