Summer Experience – Part 2

College students

Is your student still figuring out their summer plans? Here are two helpful suggestions:

  1. Handshake & LinkedIn: It’s not too late! Many organizations are still advertising opportunities on our top recruiting platforms, Handshake and LinkedIn. Encourage your student to meet with a coach to get pro tips on how to utilize these platforms effectively.
  2. Summer Experience: If your student doesn’t secure their “ideal” internship, plenty of meaningful ways exist to spend the summer. The OPCD has compiled various creative ideas for your student to explore. Whether they’re interested in working, volunteering, or learning something new, our “summer experience” page offers a range of projects that can help them develop valuable, marketable skills and experiences for the future.

Remember, whether your student is on the hunt for an internship or a full-time job, the OPCD is here to support them. Our career coaches are available and eager to assist your student in any way they can.

School of Business students

As the semester wraps up and summer kicks off, please encourage your students to stay engaged with their career development—while also taking time to recharge. Here are a few strategies to consider:

  • Networking: Summer is a fantastic time for students to connect with Wake alumni. Networking can provide valuable insights, whether they’re exploring potential career paths or focusing on a specific dream company.
  • Virtual Work Projects: Wake Forest University offers access to Forage, an e-learning platform that allows students to undertake virtual projects from leading companies from various industries. This experience helps students gain valuable feedback and skills, and enhance their business acumen in their chosen field.
  • Upskill with LinkedIn Learning: LinkedIn Learning provides an excellent opportunity for your students to enhance their marketable skills over the summer. They can explore a wide range of topics, from business management to technical skills like Excel or Python and even AI prompt engineering. This resource is available to all WFU students and is a great way to prepare for future career opportunities.

Throughout the summer, the MRE team will actively support students with resources, tools, and opportunities to connect with our coaching team. Please encourage your students to keep an eye on their emails and other school communications. If your student has questions or needs assistance, encourage them to reach out. We are here to help!

We are actively seeking entry-level job opportunities for our Class of ‘24 May graduates. If your organization has openings, please connect your hiring managers to Dana Hutchens at hutchens@wfu.edu
If your May graduate is still searching for a job, they can maintain access to their Handshake account after graduation. To do this, they can easily create an alumni email account (@alumni.wfu.edu). We’re here to support our graduates every step of the way!

What can you do as a parent?

Parents play a critical role in their child’s college experience and their decisions for the future. However, the world of work is quite different than 30, 20 or even 10 years ago. In order to give your student sound advice, it is essential for you to understand the environment, resources and opportunities available for your student. You can play an integral role as your student navigates through their time at Wake Forest and makes plans for their future.

How can I guide my student through the college-to-career process?

You know the furniture assembly instructions that are impossible to follow especially when you have missing parts? Our Ready 7 process is not like that! We not only provide 7 achievable steps for students to follow, but also the tools and resources to complete them in order to be fully “career and life ready.” As a supporter of your student, we are providing you with a Ready 7 guide which includes language on how to help your scholar navigate the process.
