As an outgrowth of the course taught by Dr. Joseph Soares, Sociology 391: Social Memories: Nazi Holocaust and US Civil War, his students focused the university's attention on an important part of Wake Forest University history previously ignored--namely, the selling of enslaved persons (as part of the Blount estate, link: https://wakespace.lib.wfu.edu/handle/10339/93888) on May 7th, 1860 to financially support Wake Forest. The following videos capture students from this course, supported by the Department of Sociology and School of Divinity, who commemorated this part of WFU history.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the second commemoration was held online on May 30, 2020. The third installment was also held virtually on May 7, 2021. Coordinated by SRMP co-chairs Kami Chavis and Tim Pyatt, the program included a musical selection sung by combined Wake Forest and Winston-Salem State choirs and remarks from WF faculty. Remarks by President Nathan O. Hatch came at the end of the program.

The fourth commemoration was held in person outside Wait Chapel on April 27, 2022.The program featured Wake Forest President Susan R. Wente, Divinity School graduate and Winston-Salem community leader Reverend Willard Bass, Professor Dean Franco (Co-chair of the SRMP), Association of Wake Forest University Black Alumni (AWFUBA) President Keenon Mann, Marion Tashome (Class of 2023), and Bea Pearson (Class of 2022). 61 names were read, along with an acknowledgment of those whose names are unknown. A musical performance preceded the spoken part of the program performed by violinist Zhané Waye and cellist Morgan Lyke. Carillonneur Anthony Tang tolled the Wait Chapel bells at the end of the program--61 for each individually named enslaved person, and 1 for all those unnamed.
