E-newsletter from the Office of Family Engagement

Summer flowers bloom on campus.

July officially marks the start of the 2024-25 academic year. There are a few key processes that families will need to take care of this summer:

  • Tuition is due August 1. Parents and families who need to know how to make tuition and other payments should plan to join us for a virtual demonstration at 7 p.m. on July 16 about how to engage with your student’s financial information in Workday. Students have to grant you access to their financials in Workday and authorize specific permissions.
  • Speaking of Workday, there is a comprehensive student training and jobaids page to help them with all Workday functions. Students may need to be logged in to their WFU email to access the jobaids.
  • Student Insurance enrollment/waiver process: All students are required to have health insurance and are automatically billed for the WFU Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) unless a waiver form demonstrating comparable coverage is submitted by the deadline. This must be done EVERY year (not just your student’s first year). Families should go to our University Health Plans website. Choose either the enrollment or waiver form and follow the prompts.
  • (Optional) Families can determine whether they want to enroll in our optional tuition insurance. This plan, through A.W.G. Dewar, Inc., will help minimize financial loss if a student suffers a serious illness or accident and must withdraw before the end of a semester, and extends and enhances the University’s published refund policy.

We wish your family a wonderful rest of the summer, and we can’t wait to have all our students back at the end of next month.

Thanks and Go Deacs!

Betsy Chapman, Ph.D. (’92, MA ’94)
Executive Director of Family Communications

For new families (of students admitted to the Class of 2028)

Welcome, P’28s (families of newly-admitted students in the Class of 2028)!

From the Office of Academic Advising:

  • Incoming Students:
    • While registration for Fall 2024 has come to a close (on July 12), incoming students will be permitted to make changes to their Fall 2024 schedule before classes begin but following the mandatory individual meeting with their assigned academic adviser during New Deac Week. It is very common for students to make changes to their schedule during this time, as well as once classes start, and students are encouraged to work closely with their assigned academic advisor (assignments will be made in August) on any registration changes. On a related note, your student should begin to become familiar with the firm deadlines on the Academic Services Calendar hosted on the Office of the University Registrar website, which contains important deadlines such as the last day to add and drop classes for the semester.

    • It’s not too late for your New Student to sign up for Project Wake! Project Wake is Wake’s version of book club. If your student is interested in reading a book and meeting with Wake Forest faculty and staff before classes start, then this is the event for them. There are so many books to choose from, AND it is a great way to connect with some of your future professors. New students can register here.

    • Pre-Wall Street Career Track: Parents/families and students of the Class of 2028 are invited to attend an information session on August 1st at 5 p.m. via Zoom to learn more about the Pre-Wall Street Career Track. The track is open to first-year students interested in exploring a career in the financial industry, including Investment Banking, Asset Management, Sales & Trading, and Private Equity on a global basis. Read more and register here.

From the Office of Sustainability:

We look forward to welcoming our Deacs on campus soon! Set your student up for a successful and sustainable move-in with a few tips from the Office of Sustainability.

  • Coordinate with roommates. For items that can be shared (couches, rugs, TVs, etc.), work together to determine who will bring what so you don’t end up with duplicate items.
  • Plan your wardrobe with longevity in mind. Certain styles–and fabrics–are timeless. Fill your closet with clothes that have staying power and avoid the temptation to fall into the fast fashion trap.
  • Bins over boxes. When packing, try to use reusable bins, bags, and suitcases that you already own in order to minimize cardboard waste, and make sure to fold and recycle any cardboard that you end up using.
  • Bring that bottle. With hundreds of refill stations providing chilled, filtered water throughout campus, make sure you and your family come prepared with your reusable water bottles. Deacs don’t do disposable!
  • Get to know your green tote. One of the first things you’ll receive on Move-In Day is a green recycling tote. This is yours to keep and use in your room to help sort bottles, cans, and paper from your non-recyclable waste.
  • When in doubt, wait. If you’re not sure if you’ll need an item that you don’t already own, hold off on that purchase. Once you start moving things in, you’ll quickly learn what’s needed versus what will simply take up precious precious space. Plus, there are plenty of stores, including Target, just minutes from campus.

From the Office of Civic & Community Engagement:

  • Is your new student interested in making a difference while at Wake Forest but doesn’t know where to start? The Virtual Tutoring Program out of the OCCE is the perfect place to start! Each year, WFU students are matched with local K-12 families for a free, one-hour virtual tutoring session once per week, beginning in September 2024.

From the Transportation and Parking Services:

  • How can my student get around campus and the community? Wake Forest is a compact, walkable, and bikeable campus with a robust shuttle system and car-sharing service. The vast majority of first-year students do not bring a car with them to campus. Check out the many transportation options available to students on the Transportation: Guide to Getting Around website.
  • All permits will now be virtual. You will no longer be required to have a physical permit. For more information please visit our License Plate Recognition website.
  • Anyone enrolled in any class or program at Wake Forest University, including study-abroad programs who wish to park a vehicle in a university parking lot at any time of day or night, including after 4:00 p.m. on weekdays, on weekends, and during academic breaks, must register that vehicle with WFU Transportation and Parking Services. Information about parking registration will be available in late July.

From the Mail Services:

  • First-year students can find their PO Box number after August 1 by logging into Workday and looking under their primary institutional address.

From the Residence Life and Housing:

Summer Session I courses end Monday, July 1. Final examinations begin July 2 and end July 3.

From CLASS (Center for Learning, Access, and Student Success)

  • Want to learn more about learning accommodations and on campus student success resources? Resources

From the Office of Personal and Career Development (OPCD):

  • Since the fall semester is about a month away, it's a good time for your student to start thinking ahead. For juniors and seniors seeking formal, paid internships or jobs with well-known organizations, on-campus recruiting begins right at the start of the Fall semester. Whether returning to campus or heading abroad, setting this year’s goals and taking action steps now will make a big difference. Encourage them to schedule a career coaching appointment on Handshake. Learn more at our website.

From the Office of Civic & Community Engagement:

  • Is your Demon Deacon studying abroad during election season? They can still cast their ballot.
    • Voter Registration: US citizens who are overseas must be registered to vote. Citizens can either be registered before they leave the country or while they are abroad. To register to vote, overseas voters must reach out to their local board of elections for guidance.
    • Casting a Ballot
      • The Federal Post Card Application is the system through which overseas voters request an absentee ballot. Applicants will fill out their information, print the form, and send it to their local election office where they have voting residency. An absentee ballot will then be mailed to them approximately 45 days before the November general election. Make sure ballots are completed fully (following any state guidelines) and mail back as soon as possible. Deadlines for ballots to count vary state by state.
      • For more on voting while abroad check out Resources for Overseas Voters.
    • Questions? Reach out to the Office of Civic and Community Engagement at communityengagement@wfu.edu.

From Student Financial Services:

  • Please be sure your students have granted you Third-Party access to their Workday Student accounts and also granted you the following permissions: Make a Payment, Proactive Past Due Notifications, View Account Activity, and View Account Statement. Many students have granted third party access but have not yet granted the permissions. The Student Financials hub went live in Workday on July 1st and fall tuition and fees have been posted. See instructions for accessing and navigating Workday Student Financials.
