It’s almost Thanksgiving! I know we will have many happy families once their students get home.
We hope parents and families will join us for Dr. Wente’s presidential address on Thursday, Nov. 16, 2023, at 4 p.m. You can join the livestream here; a captioned livestream will be available on Facebook.
November is the month when many of us start thinking about the holidays, because Thanksgiving is nearly upon us. And Thanksgiving represents a time for gratitude. So today I want to share a little bit of what I am thankful for.
I am thankful for:
Your students. They are bright and driven and they push us to think of the world and our role in it in new ways. Also, I am convinced that working with students keeps us young.
This beautiful campus. It is a blessing and a joy to be able to live and work in such gorgeous surroundings. Every fall, I marvel at the beauty of the trees and am convinced fall is the prettiest season. Then every spring I second guess that belief as we see all the flowers and trees bloom.
Our faculty and staff. We have some of the best and brightest minds teaching our students and putting their brilliance to work on behalf of some of the world’s most pressing problems, questions, and issues. We have some of the most empathetic and giving staff members who walk alongside our students in their developmental journey to young adulthood and help them grow. Their mentorship, caring, and support changes lives.
The many pleasures of college life that students experience: meeting lifelong friends; celebrating a thrilling athletic victory; eating a midnight pizza over great conversation; going to parties and dancing; sharing beloved campus traditions as a community.
Being part of a community that can celebrate together when called for, and support each other in hard times when called for. And that we all try to do our best to uphold our Pro Humanitate motto.
Last but certainly not least, I am thankful for Wake parents and families. You have not just become a part of our community by virtue of the fact that your students go here. You are an engaged, enthusiastic, and energetic constituency that matters to the University. Thank you for entrusting your children to us, and for all the ways you help Wake Forest.
May your table, your bellies, and your hearts be full this Thanksgiving,
Betsy Chapman, Ph.D. (’92, MA ’94) Executive Director of Family Communications

Academics
|
From the Office of Academic Advising (OAA):
- On November 20, the Office of Academic Advising will begin reviewing requests from students planning to seek permission to exceed the 17-credit hour limit for the spring semester. Students should write to their academic adviser and request a course overage by explaining the number of hours they wish to take, the class or classes they wish to add, and share their plan for academic success with the increased course load. If the adviser approves of the plan and provides the student written support, the student should then fill out the Credit Overload Request Form along with uploading the adviser’s statement, and submit the request form.
- Students planning to be part-time during the Spring 2023 semester (less than 12 credit hours) should seek approval from the Office of Academic Advising as soon as possible. While the deadline to make this change is in mid-January, it is financially advantageous to do so prior to the first day of class. Information on part-time status, and the application form, can be found here.
- Do you have access to your student’s midterm and final grades? If not, your student can provide you with proxy access (instructions here).Keep in mind that, while all courses must be assigned final grades, some faculty members may choose not to submit midterm grades.
- In observance of the Thanksgiving holiday, class will not be in session Wednesday through Sunday, November 22-26.
- The last day of class for the Fall 2023 semester will be Friday, December 8.
- The final exam period is scheduled for December 11–16. The final exam schedule may be found here.
From Undergraduate Summer Session:
- On November 22, the Summer Session website will be updated with all of the information you need to begin considering how Summer Session might benefit you and your student. Registration for summer 2024 will open on March 18, leaving plenty of time to peruse our course list and identify classes that will meet each individual need. As you consider our offerings, please contact us with any questions that will help you and your student prepare.
From the Center for Learning, Access, and Student Success (CLASS) :
- Reading Wellness — All students are invited to join us for our November OWLS (Outreach Workshop Learning Series). The topic is Reading Wellness: How to Get The Most Out of Your Reading Assignments; Wednesday, Nov, 15 at 6 p.m. in ZSR Library, room 476. Pizza will be provided.
- Students are encouraged to come to Drop In Coaching in the CLASS office. But if they want to just drop by CLASS and get a taste of what it’s like, they are welcome to do so on Thursdays from 3pm-5pm.

From the Office of Residence Life and Housing
- We can’t believe it's already November! Soon, many of our Deacs will be returning home for Thanksgiving Break. Just a few short weeks after that, they’ll be returning for Winter Break. This month, we’re highlighting some ways you can help them prepare.
From the Office of Personal and Career Development (OPCD)
- Can you believe it is November already? Since Thanksgiving break is Nov. 22-26, the OPCD will be sharing “Wake on Break tips with your student in The OPCD Brief by email on Monday, Nov. 13. Encourage your student to review and act on these tips — like utilizing LinkedIn Learning and Career Core to build valuable skills — to dramatically increase their internship and job prospects and add new skills to their resume and LinkedIn profile. Learn more on the OPCD Parents & Family web page, which includes new videos of our recent OPCD webinars.
From Student Financial Services:
- The spring 2024 charges are now on the account for students and their Authorized Payers to review. Please be sure your students have added you/anyone they want to have access to their account as an Authorized Payer in DEAC. Spring semester tuition is due on December 1st.
- Prepare for the unexpected and protect your investment in education. Registration is now underway for Dewar Tuition Refund Plan. This low-cost plan helps to minimize the financial loss when a student withdraws due to accident or illness. Learn more about the University’s Withdrawal/Course Drop Refund policy and how Tuition Insurance can ensure up to 75-percent refund throughout the term.
- If your student has not provided their Tax Identification Number (TIN) or Social Security Number (SSN) to Wake Forest University, they would have received an email from Student Financial Services prompting them to complete and submit the provided form. Please note; the W9-S form should be delivered to the appropriate Registrar’s Office as instructed, it should not be sent in via email. WFU is required to provide all students a complete 1098-T Tuition Tax Form each tax year, and the IRS requires that the TIN/SSN be included on this form.
From Campus Recreation:
