The passing of a Wake Forest legend

Dear Wake Forest families, today I have some sad news from campus about the loss of our beloved colleague and friend, Dr. Ed Wilson (‘43). Here is an excerpt from President Wente's message to campus:

“Last night, longtime retired Professor of English and Provost Emeritus Edwin G. Wilson (’43) passed away at the age of 101. Appropriately known as 'Mr. Wake Forest,' no one has been more closely associated with Wake Forest University or told its story more eloquently and passionately for the last half century than Dr. Wilson.

A man of extraordinary character, grace, and wisdom, Dr. Wilson has been a beloved and influential figure at Wake Forest for more than 80 years. He represented the best of Wake Forest and had a profound impact on the University, Winston-Salem and North Carolina. He has inspired generations of students to love poetry, value community and care deeply about Wake Forest. In speeches, class lectures and conversations, his eloquent voice moved us to be better thinkers and better people.”

I encourage our alumni families to share their memories of Dr. Wilson at edwilson.wfu.edu, and invite all families to read more about this remarkable man. More than any other person, Dr. Wilson helped teach me how to be a good Wake Forester. May his memory be a blessing.

As your students conclude their Spring Break, we wish them safe travels home, and a strong finish to the semester.

Go Deacs!

For new families (of Early Decision students admitted to the Class of 2028)

Welcome, P’28s (families of newly-admitted students in the Class of 2028)! We are continuing to update our New Students website for the Class of 2028, which will launch on May 1st.

Please note that all the information on that website right now pertains to the Class of 2027, not your incoming students, so do not go by those dates, or complete any forms there. We will send all P’28 families an email around May 1st once the new site is ready.

We are including you in this e-newsletter so that you can begin to see the kinds of communications that Wake Forest families receive. Please keep in mind that the details and deadlines in other sections of this e-newsletter only apply to currently-enrolled students (Classes of 2024-2027), not your incoming Deacs.

Academics

From the Office of Academic Advising (OAA):

  • The advising period for Fall 2024 registration for currently enrolled students (i.e., ‘24-’27) begins Monday, March 18 through Friday, March 29. During the advising period, students should be meeting with their academic advisers to discuss registration for Fall 2024 and to have their advising hold removed in Workday. Students who do not meet with their advisers to get their advising hold removed will not be able to register for Fall 2024 classes. Registration will take place April 1 – April 5. (NOTE: Class of ‘28 incoming students will register over the summer).
  • Second part-of-term classes began March 6. The deadline to drop a second part-of-term class is March 29.
  • The last day to withdraw from a second part-of-term course with a grade of “W” is April 11.
  • The last day to change from a course that was initially designated pass/fail to a letter grade in an approved full-term course is April 12.

Students who attend will be entered to win a private study room during finals - the CLASS Ultimate Study Experience - priceless!

NEWS

From Workday Student:

  • As of the first week of March, your student was able to begin using Workday Student to prepare for advising and course registration, and starting in July, their financial information will be in Workday, too.
  • You may receive an email from WFU Workday with the subject line Proxy Account Information saying an account has been set up for you in Workday. That’s because your student is giving you access to information, which may include the ability to see and pay bills. Note that parents and families will continue to use DEAC to pay any remaining spring or summer balances, but starting in July, you will only use Workday. Watch for more information from Student Financial Services in the coming weeks.

If you happen to find yourself in Venice between April 20 and the end of September, please come by the AAPC at the Castello Gallery, not far from the Giardini where you'll see much of the rest of the 60th International Art Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia. The project is among those officially selected by Biennale curator Adriano Pedrosa, which take place at sites throughout Venice. For more information click here.

From the Office of Sustainability:

  • Move out, don't throw out! Encourage your students to start planning ahead for move out by sorting through their items early. Students with unwanted items should bring them to the Spring Clean Out: Buy Nothing Sale on April 19 from 11:00am - 7:00pm taking place in the grassy area between Bostwick and Johnson Residence Halls. While they’re there they can browse for anything they might need for their room next year. Students are encouraged to take what they want and leave what they don’t. All unclaimed items at the end of the day will be donated to Goodwill through the DeacsDonate program. (Rain date: April 22)

From the Office of Civic & Community Engagement:

  • It’s that time of year again! Registration for this year’s Wake ’N Shake — a 12-hour dance marathon benefitting the Brian Piccolo Cancer Research Fund and the Comprehensive Cancer Center at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist — is live. Resources

From the Office of Personal and Career Development (OPCD)

  • With just 7 weeks left in the semester, now is the perfect time for your student to intensify their job or internship hunt. Encourage them to utilize Handshake to uncover new prospects. For optimal results, it's important for them to keep their profiles and career interests current and to set up saved searches.
  • Persistence is key in this journey – remind them that success comes to those who persevere. Students should apply for positions as they come across them, not waiting until the last minute. The more applications they submit, the higher their chances of securing that ideal job or internship. And remember, most students find their roles within six months after graduation, so there's no need to panic. Learn more on our Parents & Family webpage.

From Student Financial Services:

  • Need a copy of your student’s 1098-T tax form? Students can elect to receive their tax forms electronically and grant proxy access to parents or tax preparers via WIN. For more information, please visit the Tax Information page on the Student Financial Services website.
  • Have your students Sign up for Direct Deposit! Wake Forest encourages students to utilize direct deposit as doing so provides students with a convenient and secure way to access their funds faster.

From Transportation and Parking Services: FAQ: How can my student get around campus and the community?

    • Wake Forest is a compact, walkable, and bikeable campus with a robust shuttle system and car-sharing service. Here are some alternative transportation options available to students:
      • Ride the Wake Line, with continual service to Wake Downtown, popular shopping areas, and off-campus housing. Airport shuttles are available and a popular option for students during seasonal breaks. Download the Passio GO app to track WFU shuttles in real time.
      • Bring a bike to campus with you! Registration is free and bike racks are prevalent on campus. The ReCycle Bike Share program offers a limited number of semester-long loaners.
      • Hop in a Zipcar! Zipcars are located near the first-year residence halls and are available to all students 18+. Rates include gas and secondary insurance.
