E-newsletter from the Office of Family Engagement

Though it is still a few months away, we are already hard at work on plans for Family Weekend (Oct. 7-9). Here are some important dates for football ticket sales and event tickets:

  • Family Weekend football tickets go on sale on June 22 via our Athletics department. This is a change from past years, when you could order football tickets via the Family Weekend website.
  • Family Weekend is Oct. 7-9, and we play Army on Oct. 8 (game time will be announced 10 days before the game due to television scheduling).
    • Students can get a free ticket to sit in the students’ football section with their WFU ID. If your student wants to sit with you, you will need to purchase a ticket for your student.
  • Family Weekend event registration will open Aug. 3. We will have more details to share later this summer; you may wish to put a reminder in your calendar now. If you would like to begin making travel arrangements, a high level overview of the schedule can be found on the website.

Mark your calendars and make your plans now to join us for a terrific Family Weekend!

Go Deacs!

Incoming Families of the Class of 2026

Welcome, P’26s (families of newly-admitted students in the Class of 2026)! From the Office of Academic Advising (OAA):

  • During the month of June, new students are encouraged to contact the Office of Academic Advising for a telephone advising session with a member of our staff or faculty adviser. Students should follow the schedule here and use Forestry 101, the New Student Website, and other resources to prepare specific questions. Due to volume, we cannot offer multiple telephone advising sessions, so have your student prepare questions, as much as possible, ahead of time. After their advising session, if they have additional questions we ask that they direct those to us via email at undergraduateadvising@wfu.edu. This email address is monitored closely, and your student will receive a reply within 48 hours. We will be accepting advising calls Monday — Friday through July 1, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. EDT. No appointment is necessary, but students must call during their assigned week (see schedule above). If your student has missed their week, they should call as soon as possible.
  • Students will receive the DSP feedback before the first round of course registration in July. Students received the Guided Preregistration Survey via their WFU email on Friday, May 27. This survey is due by July 13. Students should stay tuned to their WFU email for more information about registration from the Office of the University Registrar.
  • Please visit the New Students Website for additional information on deadlines and to find resources to help you and your student prepare for the Fall 2022 semester.

Additional information for incoming families

  • Continue working through our page for incoming families and all its subpages to see important dates and deadlines, get advice about supporting your student, and more.
  • Read our archive of Weekly Updates for Incoming Families.
  • Please consider joining us for a New Student Reception. Two virtual receptions will be offered — one on June 22 and the other on July 20. These sessions will be recorded and posted in the days following the events.
    • At the end of each of the virtual receptions, we will have special information for international students and families.
  • We hope that your family will register for a regional New Student Reception should one be offered in your area. Details, dates, and registration can be found here.
  • We encourage you to continue letting your students have increasing independence in making decisions, handling routine tasks, communicating with campus offices, and managing deadlines, rather than you providing answers, giving reminders of what they need to do, or taking care of tasks for them. Summer is the time to help students get into the mode of self-managing, as they will need to be able to self-manage effectively once they arrive for college.

From WakeWare, the Student Laptop Program:

  • Apple has announced updates to the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro 13" with a new M2 processor but has not specified an exact date when these will be available — coming some time in July. You can view the new models that will be available through the program on the WakeWare website. We appreciate your patience as we work with our Bookstore to get the models up for pre-orders. Additionally, Microsoft Surface has announced an updated Surface Laptop Go 2 — more information coming soon!
  • Please be mindful, we are still awaiting potential back to school announcements from our vendors but we encourage you to order your laptop by mid-July due to expected supply delays.
  • As a reminder, in order to support a portable learning environment, every student is required to bring a laptop to campus. You can learn more about minimum computer requirements here.

Academics

From the Office of Academic Advising (OAA):

  • For students currently enrolled in summer school courses, keep in mind that the last day to drop a full summer course is today, June 21. Full summer courses include any courses that meet 10 or more weeks (including online courses that meet 10 or more weeks). You can find a complete list of deadlines here. Summer Session I courses end Tuesday, June 29. Final examinations begin June 20 and end July 1.
  • The Office of Academic Advising is open during normal business hours over the summer (Monday, Wednesday-Friday from 8:30 am until 5 pm and Tuesday from 9:30 am until 5 pm) and staff members are available to answer questions over the phone or via email. You can reach us by phone at 336-758-3320, or via email at undergraduateadvising@wfu.edu.

From the School of Business:

  • Wake Forest’s Pre-College Programs Accepting Applications — Wake Forest University’s Summer Immersion and Summer Exploration Programs offer middle and high school students a unique experience to explore career pathways, discover their passion and make friends from around the world.
  • Be a Double Deac — Would you like to earn your MBA from the #1 ranked part-time program in North Carolina? If so, we invite you to learn about the Winston-Salem or Charlotte Evening MBA programs. Classes begin in late August, and we’d love for you to join the Class of 2024!

Events

From the School of Business:

From Fraternity and Sorority Life: Fraternity and Sorority Life released recruitment dates and information for the fall (sophomores and above) and spring. For more information, visit the How to Join page on their website.

Resources and News

From Residence Life and Housing: This month, we have reminders for families whose students are participating in the second round of housing selection and for the return to campus in August (or July, for Summer Session II participants). Read more.

From Student Financial Services:

  • Congratulations to the Class of 2022! If your student has recently graduated, please check their DEAC account for any credit or outstanding balances. If they have a credit balance, they can submit a Refund Request Form; if they have an outstanding balance on the account, please remit payment as soon as possible to clear the account.
  • We will begin billing for the fall 2022 semester on July 1st. Please be sure your students have added you or anyone they want to have access to their account as an Authorized Payer in DEAC so you receive the appropriate notifications and are granted permission to discuss the details of their student account.

From the Office of Sustainability and Transportation and Parking Services: No Car Needed! Ways to Get Around Campus and Winston-Salem Without a Personal Vehicle

  • Wake Forest’s Reynolda campus is extremely walkable and bikeable. Most anywhere can be reached on foot in less than 15 minutes!
  • A new centralized shuttle hub between Poteat and Kitchin Halls will debut this fall, resulting in more efficient shuttle services, improved route times, and a simpler schedule. Two new bus shelters will keep riders protected from inclement weather.
  • Wake Forest operates a fleet of scheduled shuttles and on-demand service to the campus community. The Wake Lines offer service to Wake Downtown, Hanes Mall, Target, and the Coliseum for basketball games. Shuttles are also offered to and from Greensboro (GSO) and Charlotte (CLT) airports during designated break times throughout the year.
  • Need to get somewhere not served by a shuttle? Grab a Zipcar — conveniently located in multiple locations on campus — for a low rate that includes gas and insurance!

From the Office of Personal and Career Development (OPCD):

  • Students or recent grads needing assistance or support can make an appointment via Handshake any time this summer.
  • Students abroad this fall should meet with a career coach this summer to prepare for their “virtual” job search and interviews.
  • Business Students: Check out the “MRE 2022 Kick Starter” job search guide in Canvas. Other valuable job career resources are available online.
  • College Students: Check out Career Core, our new online available-any-time resource based on our popular College-to-Career courses. Here are some great tips to make the most of your summer internship.

Campus Safety

Wake Forest uses the Wake Alert system — voicemail, email, text message, website and web banners, and social media (Twitter, Facebook) — to notify faculty, staff and students when the University believes that members of the Wake Forest community could be at risk. Those messages are issued as soon as pertinent, vetted information is available. It may take time for authorities to investigate, verify and provide instructions or updates.
