E-newsletter from the Office of Family Engagement

We hope your Deacs had a great Fall Break and are ready for the second half of the semester!

The University’s Campus Health Committee recently shared information about COVID-19 and flu vaccines for our campus:

We strongly recommend all community members continue to receive variant-updated boosters for COVID-19 and flu each year. As the late fall and winter respiratory viral season approaches and we transition to more indoor activities, the likelihood of COVID-19, flu and other viral infection increases.”

You can read their full message on our new Campus Health website.

Students are going to be engaged in academic planning over the coming weeks: students should be making appointments with their advisor(s) for advising: both the Lower Division (i.e., pre-major) advising period and the Major/Minor advising period take place October 17-28. Students will register for spring classes October 31-November 11.

We are more than halfway through the semester, hard as that is to believe. Before we know it, it will be Winter Break.

Go Deacs!

Academics

From the Office of Academic Advising (OAA):

  • Second part-of-term classes began on October 10. Remember...
    • The deadline to add a second part-of-term course is October 18.
    • The deadline to drop a second part-of-term course is October 28.
  • The schedule of Spring 2022 classes will be available starting October 14 and the advising period for Spring 2022 registration is October 17-28. During this period, students will have a required meeting with their faculty advisers, at which point they will receive their personal PIN numbers for registration. If students do not meet with their advisers, they will not get their PIN numbers and will not be able to register for Spring 2022 classes. Registration will take place October 31-November 10, at which point students can log into the registration portal during their assigned registration time and register using their PIN numbers.
  • The last day to drop a full-term course with a grade of “W” is October 24.

From the Office of the Dean of the College:

  • Is your student still on the hunt for that perfect whiteboard to practice conjugations or solve problem sets? Are they looking for a quiet campus corner near coffee, or a big table to spread out and collaborate with project partners? Remind them to visit Wake Study Space to find on demand and by reservation use.
  • For any P’26 families, have you discovered the South Forest website? You can see the Faculty Fellows assigned to your student’s residence hall and learn more about life on the south part of campus.

Events

From the School of Business: Students Talking Stocks (Virtual)
Students and their families are invited to join Seniors in the School of Business and their professor, Mark Johnson, as they discuss stocks that they are investing in through the School of Business Student Investment Fund. The students will provide their market outlook for the remainder of the year, too! This event will take place on October 19 from 7-8 p.m. EDT. Interested students or families can register here.

From CLASS (Center for Learning, Access, and Success): From October 24-28th, CLASS will present our annual Academic Resources Awareness Week (ARAW) in partnership with Student Government. ARAW is dedicated to increasing awareness of on campus academic resources and normalizing their use. Please visit the CLASS website to see all the fun and informative activities we have planned.

From the OCCE (Office of Civic and Community Engagement):

  • The 2022 WFU student voting guide to explore all the different ways that students can vote in this year’s election. Whether students are voting in the state of North Carolina during One-Stop Early Voting (October 20-Nov.5), in person on election day, or via absentee voting we have you covered. Students voting in Forsyth County during the early voting period may cast their ballot at Winston-Salem First Assembly (map) — walkable, and less than a mile from the center of campus.
  • For the first time since 2019, Project Pumpkin will return to campus on Tuesday, October 25! A signature student event, Project Pumpkin welcomes local school children to the Reynolda campus for an afternoon fall festival that includes trick-or-treating, entertainment, and educational activities. In addition, the event helps raise money to support the Wake Forest University Children’s Defense Fund Freedom School.

Resources and News

From Transportation and Parking Services:

  • Transportation and Parking Services offers airport shuttle transportation during designated break times throughout the school year. Service is provided both to and from Greensboro’s Piedmont Triad International Airport (GSO-PTI) and Charlotte’s Douglas International Airport (CLT).
  • The registration window for Thanksgiving airport transportation will be open from November 1-21. You can register and view campus-to-airport departure and airport-to-campus return dates/times here.

From Student Financial Services:

  • If your student has not provided their Tax Identification Number (TIN) or Social Security Number (SSN) to Wake Forest University, they will need to be on the lookout for an email from Student Financial Services prompting them to complete and submit the provided form. Please note, the W9-S form should be delivered to the appropriate Registrar’s Office as instructed, it should not be sent in via email. WFU is required to provide all students a complete 1098-T Tuition Tax Form each tax year, and the IRS requires that the TIN/SSN be included on this form.
  • We will begin billing for the spring 2023 semester on November 1st. Make sure your student has added you as an Authorized Payer in DEAC so you receive the appropriate notifications and are granted access and permission to discuss the details of the student account.

From the Safe Office: The Safe Office provides confidential support to Reynolda campus graduate and undergraduate students who have experienced or are experiencing interpersonal violence (including but not limited to sexual harassment, sexual assault, relationship violence, and stalking). We can be reached 24/7 (during the Fall and Spring semesters) by calling 336.758.5285 and following the prompts. We are also available for non-urgent needs at safe@wfu.edu. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM). Learn more about our DVAM programming by visiting @wfusafe on Instagram, and visit our website for service information and parents and families resource page.

From Residence Life and Housing: This time of year, we encourage residents to begin thinking ahead to breaks, next semester, and how they might want to get more involved in their community. Of particular importance for those students who may be looking for a change in housing this spring are the Spring 2023 Housing Processes available starting next week. Read more.

From the Office of Personal and Career Development (OPCD): The job and internship market for college students is very HOT! Juniors and Seniors should be actively engaged in the job search process right now. They should complete their Handshake profile to indicate their interests to employers, apply for opportunities, register for informational sessions, and set up an appointment with a career coach. They won’t miss a beat if they subscribe to a Career Pathways newsletter and review our new OPCD website.

From From Athletics:

  • Parents and families are encouraged to sign up for Wake Forest Athletics free daily Deacon Sports Xtra or any other free digital communication by emailing wfsports@wfu.edu.
  • Inside Higher Ed gave national recognition for Wake Forest’s innovative student pregame tailgate zone, which brought together members of 29 campus organizations and saw multiple games with more than 80% of Wake Forest’s student body in attendance for home football games a season ago.
  • If your student is interested in volunteering for roles within Athletics, please have them reach to wfsports@wfu.edu

Campus Safety

Wake Forest uses the Wake Alert system — voicemail, email, text message, website and web banners, and social media (Twitter, Facebook) — to notify faculty, staff and students when the University believes that members of the Wake Forest community could be at risk. Those messages are issued as soon as pertinent, vetted information is available. It may take time for authorities to investigate, verify and provide instructions or updates.
