E-newsletter from the Office of Family Engagement

The Quad illuminated for the holidays.

Final exams have concluded, our residential communities have closed for the semester, and our students have returned home for what I hope will be a happy and restful Winter Break. Enjoy every moment you have with your Deacs!

We have some very exciting news to share in our last e-newsletter of this calendar year:

“Last week, Wake Forest announced a transformational $30 million gift to advance entrepreneurship education. The remarkable support allows us to elevate our Center for Entrepreneurship to new heights, ensuring extraordinary programs and offerings for our students. This gift — and the inspiration it will spark — are vital to shaping the future achievements of students, faculty, staff and alumni. Read the full announcement.”

Though our students have left for Winter Break, Wake Forest is open through December 22, then we will be closed from December 23-January 3, 2025. Administrative offices will reopen on Monday, January 6.

Until then, on behalf of all my colleagues, I wish you and your family all the best for the holidays. See you in the New Year!

Betsy Chapman, Ph.D. (’92, MA ’94)
Executive Director of Family Communications

Resources

From the University Counseling Center:

  • The University Counseling Center will be closed during the University closure from Friday, Dec. 20 at 3:00 p.m. until Monday, Jan. 6 at 8:30 a.m. During this time, students can access our after hours crisis counselor-on-call by calling our office at 336.758.5273.
  • Please follow our Instagram!

From the Deacon Health:

  • Deacon Health will have reduced hours from Dec. 16 to Dec. 20 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The last full day of Pharmacy services is December 13th. Please plan accordingly with any medication needs. Although Deacon Health will be closed for winter break, students can still call the nurse triage line for illness needs.

From the Office of Personal and Career Development (OPCD):

  • Over 83,000 jobs and internships have been available to students on Handshake since July 2024, and many new opportunities are posted daily. Students must apply early as opportunities get filled quickly. Encourage your student to apply for all interesting opportunities over winter break, as it often takes over 10 applications to get just one interview!
  • Check out the Wake on Break webpage, which provides ways to keep your student engaged in career activities while away from campus. It offers resources to explore careers, connect with alumni, and prepare for their futures.

From OPCD and the School of Business:

  • Finance career resources available to all Wake Forest students: Regardless of your student's year or major, Wake Forest students who are interested in careers in Finance have new resources to help them in their college-to-career journey:
    • The Explore Finance Paths website helps students get started with some of the basics of careers in finance.
    • The Market Readiness Finance website drills a level deeper, including helping students understand the recruiting timeline for Finance internships and careers, see the kinds of interview questions and business cases they may encounter, and videos on important market readiness skills - everything from roles, interviewing, and networking to industry provided content.
    • These resources are available today to all students. This is important because the recruiting timeline for finance careers begins earlier and earlier in the student experience, even before students declare their major. These new resources help equip and prepare students of all class years for the internship and job search process.
    • Sometime in early spring, we will launch a self-paced online course that will guide students through all they need to know to prepare themselves to find a job or internship in Finance. We will share that course when it is available.

From Residence Life and Housing:

  • The Holidays are here, and soon that means many of our Deacs will be coming home! As we near the Winter Break, we have some friendly reminders to help our Deacs prepare for an extended break away from campus and the Spring 2025 semester ahead.
  • We are looking for students to join our team! Our Resident Adviser (RA) application is currently open for the 25-26 academic year and applications are due January 14, 2025.
  • Read more in our December 2024 Newsletter

From Deacon Dining:

  • Winter Break is the perfect time to take a step back and focus on self-care, giving everyone a chance to recharge and plan for the year ahead. While your students are away, we'll be busy working on a new calendar full of exciting events and all things food. Let’s make this winter break a time to reset and look forward to what’s ahead!

Taking a Pause and Time for Self-Care During Winter Break

As winter break arrives, the shorter days and longer nights offer a perfect opportunity to slow down and reconnect with ourselves. Whether it’s enjoying a warm cup of tea or simply taking a few moments to focus on your breath, these small acts can create space for reflection, renewal, and a reset.

One simple way to center yourself is box breathing, a technique that can help reduce stress and improve focus:

Box Breathing Technique:

  1. Inhale for 4 seconds.
  2. Hold for 4 seconds.
  3. Exhale for 4 seconds.
  4. Hold for 4 seconds.

Repeat for 3-5 cycles. This calming exercise helps bring you back to the present moment and re-energizes your mind and body.

Taking time to pause, rest, and reflect is essential for our well-being. When we make space for stillness, we return with more clarity and resilience — ready to embrace what’s ahead.

From Transportation and Parking Services:

From Sustainability:

  • The annual winter break and temperature setback program will begin the evening of Friday, Dec. 20. We are grateful for our colleagues in Facilities, Real Estate, & Planning who execute this program and to students for implementing the 3Ps. Energy reduction efforts through previous unoccupied setbacks have saved the University over $1.5 million in utility costs.

Athletics

From Athletics:

  • After 11 transformative seasons leading the Wake Forest Demon Deacons football program, Dave Clawson has announced his resignation as head coach, effective immediately. Clawson leaves an indelible legacy as one of the most successful and impactful leaders in Wake Forest Athletics history. Read the release.
  • Men’s Basketball ACC Three Game Packages are available for $120, including either Duke or UNC, and two additional select ACC opponents.
  • Premium single game suites and floor seat options are also available. For any inquiries regarding suites of floor seats, please contact Zach Bingham by email binghaz@wfu.edu or by phone at 336.758.4021.
  • Group tickets for Men’s Basketball are available starting at $12 for select games. Please contact the ticket office at 336.758.3322.
