WakeParents & Families

E-newsletter from the Office of Family Engagement

Congratulations to the Class of 2024 and P’24s!

Commencement was yesterday, and we celebrate the achievements of our Class of 2024, and share in the justifiable pride of our P’24 parents and families. We had pretty much perfect weather, too!

If you want to relive the joys of yesterday when your Deac crossed the stage, P’24s (or if you want a preview of coming attractions, P’25s-28s), you can watch the ceremony or see the Commencement program. Additional coverage:

We want to remind families that tickets for the Family Weekend football game went on sale at 10 a.m. today.

As the time for our P’24s comes to an end, our P’28s’ time at Wake Forest is just beginning! P’28s will continue to get weekly messages each Tuesday from now until move-in.

Wishing all of you a happy summer. Go Deacs!

For new families (of Early Decision students admitted to the Class of 2028)

Welcome, P’28s (families of newly-admitted students in the Class of 2028)!

  • New students should be working on their New Student Checklist, and new families should be working on their New Families Checklist.
  • During the month of June, new students in the Class of 2028 are encouraged to contact the Office of Academic Advising to have a telephone advising session with a member of our staff. Students should follow the schedule and should use the New Student Website to prepare specific questions. Due to volume, we cannot offer multiple telephone advising sessions, so please have your student prepare their questions, as much as possible, ahead of time. After their advising session, if they have additional questions, we ask that they email undergraduateadvising@wfu.edu. This email address is monitored closely, and your student will typically receive a reply within 48 hours. We will be accepting advising calls Monday-Friday, June 3-June 28, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. EDT. No appointment is necessary, but students must call during their assigned week (see schedule above). The University will be closed on Wednesday, June 19 in observance of Juneteenth.
  • New incoming students should have received a link to an online Guided Pre-Registration Survey via their WFU email on Wednesday, May 1. This important survey will help prepare your student for registration as well as their June Advising session. Incoming first-year students will be registering for a maximum of 17 credit hours between July 10-12.
  • All incoming students and their parents/family are encouraged to attend our June 17 Virtual New Student Reception. Details about how to join the virtual event will be emailed to registered guests on June 16; the event will be recorded and posted on the New Student Receptions website following the event.
  • We also encourage students and families to register for an in-person New Student Reception if you are interested (whether it is in your hometown or elsewhere). Preregistration is required. Check this list frequently over the summer, as new dates and locations may be added.
  • From the Office of Civic & Community Engagement: The Office of Civic & Community Engagement hosts two Pre-Orientation programs for incoming Wake Forest students: Deacon Camp and SPARC. Over the course of four days, students from each program will come together and participate in direct service with local nonprofit organizations where they’ll engage in meaningful social change, all while learning about campus traditions and being introduced to their new home in Winston-Salem and building relations with their fellow Demon Deacons.
  • For families looking to buy a laptop for their student:
    • WakeWare is the Wake Forest laptop program, with Macbooks and Microsoft Surface laptops chosen by the Information Systems team and available to purchase for home delivery or pickup through the Wake Forest bookstore.
    • WakeWare laptops are specially priced and bundled with four years of onsite Safeware damage and repair coverage (handled through The Bridge IT support desk at ZSR). During repairs, WakeWare students have preferred access to loaners so their work can proceed without disruption. Peruse models and learn more at wakeware.wfu.edu or stop by the Wake Forest Taylor bookstore to view and purchase.
    • Note: some students have access to special technology grant funding. Students receiving this aid are notified through their Wake Forest email account, as well as through their financial aid portal.
  • Once your students register for classes in July, textbooks will available via the Bookstore with many options to choose from: new or used, rentals (save up to 80%), digital, and a price match; see the Bookstore website for details. The Bookstore is also an official provider of WakeWare, an authorized Apple, Dell and Lenovo retail store with accessories.
  • From Mail Services: First-year students can find their PO Box number after August 1 by logging into Workday and looking under their primary institutional address.

Academics

From the Office of Academic Advising (OAA):

  • Final grades for all Spring 2024 courses should be available for students after May 21.
  • Summer Session I will begin on May 29. Students can register for summer courses via WIN up until May 31. However, if a student plans to participate in Summer Session I, they should register before the start of classes for Summer Session I. See more information on summer school.
  • The staff of the Office of Academic Advising will be available during our normal business hours over the summer, Monday-Friday from 12-5 p.m. Additionally, your student can reach us by phone at 336-758-3320 or via email at undergraduateadvising@wfu.edu.

From Undergraduate Summer Session

  • Summer Session is nearly here, but there is still time to register for classes. If you have recently been accepted to begin at Wake Forest in fall 2024, consider getting started early by taking some classes this summer. Newly admitted and visiting students should submit an online application for Session I by May 22 and Session II by July 2.
  • Current WFU students can self-register until May 31, and should contact the Summer Session office to make registration changes after that date.
  • Please contact us with any questions.

From Military Science Department and ROTC

  • Did you know your student can earn full tuition and fees scholarships, $1200 per year for books, a $420 monthly stipend and a guaranteed job upon graduation? If this interests your student, check out the WFU Army ROTC program.
  • Your student can learn more about the program without a service commitment to the Army. Students can reach out to us for more information at ROTC@wfu.edu or enroll in the introductory military science courses (MIL 121 for first year students or MIL 123 for sophomores).

We will be utilizing a new platform via University Health Plans (UHP) in an effort to make the process more user-friendly and efficient. Watch for details in the June newsletter. Reminder: ALL STUDENTS must enroll every year (not just their first year).
