WakeParents & Families

E-newsletter from the Office of Family Engagement

Normally the summer is a slower time on campus, but not this summer: Wake Forest Baseball is going to Omaha for the College World Series! Our first game will be Saturday, June 17th and we will kick off with a special DEACTOWN Omaha party three hours before the first pitch. Find all the information about tickets, travel, and events at Postseason Central.

We could not be prouder of our Deacs, or more excited. Hope you can join the fun in Omaha!

Go Deacs!

Incoming families of the Class of 2027

From the Office of Academic Advising:

  • During the month of June, new students are encouraged to contact the Office of Academic Advising for a telephone advising session with a member of our staff or faculty adviser. Students should follow the schedule here and use the New Students Website and other resources to prepare specific questions.
    • Due to volume, we cannot offer multiple telephone advising sessions, so have your student prepare questions, as much as possible, ahead of time.
    • After their advising session, if they have additional questions, we ask that they email undergraduateadvising@wfu.edu. This email address is monitored closely, and your student will typically receive a reply within 48 hours.
    • We will be accepting advising calls Monday – Friday through June 30, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. EDT. No appointment is necessary, but students must call during their assigned week (see schedule above). If your student has missed their week, they should call as soon as possible.
  • Students received the Guided Preregistration Survey via their WFU email on Friday, May 26. This survey is due by July 13. Students should stay tuned to their WFU email for more information about registration from the Office of the University Registrar.
  • The First Year Writing Decision Tool will help students decide which writing pathway (WRI 109 + 110 -or- WRI 111) works best for their needs during the first year. For more information about our Writing Program, please visit the Writing Program website.
  • Please visit the New Students Website for additional information on deadlines and to find resources to help you and your student prepare for the Fall 2023 semester.

From the Student Health Service: Required health and immunization documentation is due July 1 in the Student Health Portal.

We have seen a high number of new students incorrectly uploading their immunization documentation and health information forms. Students cannot simply upload a PDF of their immunization documentation and satisfy the immunization requirement. Every new student needs to input the dates of each immunization in the Immunization History form so that the immunizations can be added to your medical record and seen by healthcare providers during office visits.

As a reminder, all new students have 4 forms they must complete in the Student Health Portal:

  • Immunization History — after your student inputs the dates of all required vaccines in the form, then they attach the PDF of their immunization record
  • Medical History
  • Emergency Contact and Consent
  • TB Screening

3-5 business days after your student has uploaded all forms, they must check the Secure Messages section of the Student Health Portal to ensure their documentation has not been returned for missing or incomplete information.

Even if your student thinks they have done this correctly, we need ALL students to log in to the Student Health Portal and check their Secure Messages for any errors. If they do not follow this process and upload all documentation as required, they run the risk of not being able to attend Pre-Orientation, move in to the residence halls, and attend classes.

From the Center for Immigration Services & Support (ISS):

  • Hello, Class of 2027 international students and families! This is a reminder from the Center for Immigration Services & Support (ISS) that all new international students are required to attend Connect@Wake from Saturday, August 19 – Tuesday, August 22. Connect@Wake is the mandatory orientation for new undergraduate international students with F-1 or J-1 visa status who are attending Wake Forest University for the first time.
  • International students must arrive on campus on Saturday, August 19 between 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. ISS will communicate details regarding the Connect@Wake schedule of activities to new international students through their WFU email account.
  • Any international students who have not yet received their I-20 or DS-2019 should reach out to ISS (iss@wfu.edu) for assistance. We look forward to welcoming you to campus

Pre-Orientation Programs — Wake Forest offers a variety of Pre-Orientation programs for new students. To learn more about Pre-Orientation, check out the New Students website.

From Student Financial Services:

We include P’27s in this e-newsletter so that you can see how we communicate with Wake Forest families. Please remember that the details and deadlines in the remaining sections of this e-newsletter only apply to currently-enrolled students (Classes of 2023-2026), not your incoming Deacs.

Academics

From the Office of Academic Advising (OAA):

  • For students currently enrolled in summer school courses, keep in mind that the last day to drop a full summer course is June 22. Full summer courses include any courses that meet 10 or more weeks (including online courses that meet 10 or more weeks). You can find a complete list of deadlines here. Summer Session I courses end Tuesday, June 27. Final examinations begin June 28 and end June 29.
  • The Office of Academic Advising is open during normal business hours over the summer (Monday–Friday from 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m.) and staff members are available to answer questions over the phone or via email. You can reach us by phone at 336-758-3320, or via email at undergraduateadvising@wfu.edu.

From the ZSR Library:

  • LIB100 and 200 classes — In our credit-based courses, students gain familiarity with the ZSR Library, its available resources, and the realm of academic research. We place significant emphasis on developing the skill of information evaluation, enabling students to assess the appropriateness and credibility of research materials. Additionally, we address important topics such as copyright, plagiarism, and the influence of the Internet on research. Take a closer look at the courses offered.
  • ZSR Summer Building Renovations — We are excited to announce numerous summer improvement projects to make the building even better! Updates to project dates and descriptions will be available on our website. Pardon our dust while we work on these improvements! The library will be back in top form by the end of the summer, and ready to welcome students back.

From Transportation and Parking Services: Some of you might be asking whether your student needs to bring a car to campus:

  • The answer is no, as Wake Forest operates a fleet of scheduled shuttles and on-demand service to the campus community. The Wake Lines offers service to Hanes Mall, Target and Wake Downtown.
  • Students are encouraged to download the Passio app (which will be available in early July) to their smartphone to track each shuttle’s location on the various routes and see estimated times of arrival.
  • During academic breaks (Thanksgiving, Winter Break and Spring Break) Airport shuttles are available to and from Greensboro’s Piedmont Triad International Airport (GSO-PTI) and Charlotte’s Douglas International Airport (CLT).

From the Office of Personal and Career Development (OPCD):

  • Summer is here, and the Wake Forest Career Team is available and ready for your students who want to explore their options for majors, get ready to pursue job opportunities/internship opportunities or have career/graduate school-related questions. Encourage students to contact us with any questions they may have. The best way to connect is via Handshake.
  • If your organization is hiring for internships or full-time jobs now or next year, see our website for opportunities to recruit Wake Forest talent.

From Student Financial Services:

  • In preparation for Fall 2023, please ensure your student adds you as an authorized payer in DEAC to ensure statement notifications are sent to you; for more information as well as instruction, please visit the SFS website. We will begin billing for the fall semester in July, 2023.

Athletics

From Athletics:

  • Family Weekend football tickets to the Wake Forest vs Georgia Tech game on Saturday, September 23rd are still available. If you have not ordered already, you can click here to purchase your tickets. Act now to get the best seats possible, as this game will sell out in the coming months.

Campus Safety

Wake Forest uses the Wake Alert system — voicemail, email, text message, website and web banners, and social media (Twitter, Facebook) — to notify faculty, staff and students when the University believes that members of the Wake Forest community could be at risk. Those messages are issued as soon as pertinent, vetted information is available. It may take time for authorities to investigate, verify and provide instructions or updates.
