WakeParents & Families

E-newsletter from the Office of Family Engagement

March brings a profusion of spring flowers and ushers in two exciting moments in the life of our campus: acceptance letters will soon be mailed to students who are invited to become members of the Class of 2027, and we are preparing to send the Class of 2023 into the world as graduates in May.

If you are a P’23 parent or family member, check out the Commencement website for details of the weekend. While the speaker has not yet been announced, there is lots of good info on the website to help you plan your family’s Commencement weekend festivities.

If you are a P’27 parent or family member, we are hard at work on updating our New Students website for the Class of 2027, and it should be launched on or about May 1st. Note that all information on that page right now is from last year’s Class of 2026.

In academic news, President Wente shared an announcement about academic leadership this afternoon:

Following the completion of a national search, we are pleased to announce that Jackie Krasas, Ph.D., will join Wake Forest University as the Dean of the College and Dean of the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences. She will begin July 1.

Dr. Krasas comes from Lehigh University, where she currently serves as deputy provost for faculty affairs. She brings extensive scholarship, teaching and administrative experience to her role as Dean. We are confident she will further enhance and extend Wake Forest’s reputation for academic and research excellence while developing new ways to ensure our faculty and students flourish.

You can read the full campus message here. We look forward to welcoming Dean Krasas to campus in July!

For all families, Face to Face is excited to host Tony award winning actor and singer Kristin Chenoweth in conversation with NPR Arts Critic Bob Mondello at LJVM Coliseum on April 12 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are still available! You can purchase tickets here. These events have been hugely popular — if you are looking for a reason to drop into town to visit your Deac, consider making it a two-fer and seeing Face to Face too.

We’re past the halfway mark of the semester — may your students finish strong!

Go Deacs!

Betsy Chapman, Ph.D. (’92, MA ’94)

Incoming families of the Class of 2027

Important information for P’27s (families of newly-admitted students in the Class of 2027):

We are currently updating our New Students website for an anticipated launch on May 1st. Please note that all information currently on that website was for the Class of 2026, and is not for your incoming ’27 students. We will send all P’27 families an email on May 1st once the new site is ready for you and your students.

We include P’27s in this e-newsletter so that you can begin to see the kinds of communications that Wake Forest families receive. All information in this Incoming Families section of the e-newsletter pertains to P ’27 families. But keep in mind that the details and deadlines in all other sections of this e-newsletter only apply to currently-enrolled students (Classes of 2023-2026), not your incoming Deacs.

Academics

From the Office of Academic Advising (OAA):

  • The advising period for Spring 2023 registration is underway and runs through Friday, March 24. During the advising period, students should be meeting with their academic advisers to discuss registration for Fall 2023 and receive a PIN number to access registration. Students who do not meet with their advisers to get their PIN number will not be able to register for Fall 2023 classes. Registration will take place March 27 – April 7.
  • Registration for summer classes began March 13 and goes through May 25. Students do not need a PIN to register for summer classes. Find out more about WFU summer school.
  • Second part-of-term classes began February 28. The deadline to drop a second part-of-term class is March 23.

From Summer Session:

  • The Summer Session website is your one stop shop for all undergraduate summer information. Registration for Summer Session is now open and will run through the beginning of Summer Session I until May 25. We also accept visiting college students from other universities and rising high school juniors and seniors, so spread the word to your family and friends!
  • Please contact the Center for Global Programs and Studies if you are interested in summer abroad programs, as these may have different application and registration dates. For all other inquiries regarding summer classes at Wake Forest, contact us.

Events

From CLASS (Center for Learning, Access, and Student Success):

  • Encourage your student to join CLASS for a mini workshop on Wednesday, March 29 at 5:30 p.m. in WakerSpace titled When Tests Aren't Optional: Strategies for Battling Test Anxiety. This interactive workshop is part of the CLASS-sponsored OWLS (Outreach Workshop Learning Series) where every month a different topic related to learning is explored.
  • Encourage your students to meet with a peer tutor and/or academic coach. Academic Coaches help students with time management, study strategies, and more! Peer Tutors can help explain material and are excellent study partners!

From the Women’s Center: We have a packed program calendar for Women’s History Month with events for students, staff, faculty, and alumni to attend. All events have been made possible in collaboration with incredible campus partners. Please encourage your Deacs to follow our Instagram for more information about our Women’s History Month events!

From Wake Forest Executive Education: Join Wake Forest Executive Education this spring for a Certificate in Digital Marketing (offered virtually). Digital is the new normal accounting for almost 75% of total marketing spend. In this certificate course, we will cover the fundamental principles and best practices in digital marketing strategy along with the tactics to be successful. Topics such as positioning, pricing, market research-derived segmentation and targeting, packaging, channel management, marketing communications, brand management, and marketing analytics will be explored in detail. Register online by April 6.

From the OCCE (Office of Civic and Community Engagement):

  • Summer Nonprofit Immersion Program: Each summer, the OCCE places full-time undergraduate students and recent graduates in paid internships with community partner sites to help enrich students' academic and vocational development, all while helping to build capacity at local nonprofits. Interested students are seeking scholarly, professional, and personal development through intensive work in the nonprofit sector. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until the March 20 deadline. Your students can learn more and apply. Additional opportunities for students are also available with the Wake Forest Freedom School. Those students interested in working with Freedom School can apply online.
  • Public Health AmeriCorps at Wake Forest: Created in collaboration with the Center for Disease Control and AmeriCorps, Public Health AmeriCorps at WFU aims to address public health challenges and support the training and development of the next generation of public health leaders. Members will complete 900 hours of service (September 2023-August 2024), at healthcare agencies throughout Winston-Salem. Participating students will receive a monthly living allowance and are eligible for a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award upon completion of their service. Applications are live and will be accepted through March 26th. Students can learn more about the program and apply.
  • Wake ’N Shake 2023: It’s that time of year again! Registration for this year’s Wake ’N Shake — a 12-hour dance marathon benefitting the Brian Piccolo Cancer Research Fund and the Comprehensive Cancer Center at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist — is live. Last year the WFU community came together to raise $310,838.00! All students are welcome to join in on the fight against cancer. Students can register today and learn more about Wake 'N Shake.

See the Events Calendar.

Resources and News

From the Office of Residence Life and Housing: This month, we want to lay out important dates for the remainder of the semester and go into some reminders for you around what your student is asked to do as they leave campus for the summer (or stay, for those who may be enrolling in summer courses). Read more.

From the Office of Personal and Career Development (OPCD): There are only six weeks remaining this semester! There’s actually more than enough time for your student to engage in the job or internship search through networking, applications, and career coaching. To get your students started and keep them on track OR help them make the most of their internship or launch well after they graduate, see the OPCD webpage for parents and families.

From Hospitality and Auxiliary Services: We have two summer jobs open that students can apply for. If your student will be in Winston-Salem for the summer, please feel free to pass these along for consideration.

  • Graylyn Pool Lifeguard — Ensures personal safety for any individual using the Graylyn Pool & Tennis Club facilities including the swimming pool, locker rooms, showers, and surrounding areas through preventative guarding methods. Lifeguards must respond accordingly with sound lifeguarding principles to any emergency situation that may occur in the pool or surrounding area.
  • Conference & Event Services Summer Event Coordinator — The Summer Event Coordinator (SEC) will assist in the day-to-day operations of camps and conferences. You will be expected to serve as the liaison to a select group of camps and conferences and routinely follow up with guests to ensure a successful event.

From Campus Rec: Are your students returning to Winston-Salem for the summer? If they are looking for a fun way to get involved and build professional skills, Campus Recreation is hiring for part-time summer employment! We have numerous positions available within the Wellbeing Center, including Fitness Attendants, Lifeguards, Swim Instructors, Welcome Desk, and even Building Supervisors. Part-time employees will benefit from a flexible work schedule, professional development, and a free summer membership to the Wellbeing Center. Interested candidates can find more information on our website or can reach out to us by email:

From Student Financial Services:

  • Need a copy of your student’s 1098-T tax form? Students can elect to receive their tax forms electronically and grant proxy access to parents or tax preparers via WIN. For more information, please visit the Tax Information page on the Student Financial Services website.
  • Have your students sign up for Direct Deposit! Wake Forest encourages students to utilize direct deposit as doing so provides students with a convenient and secure way to access their funds faster.
  • Wake Forest will no longer require returning Undergraduate students to pay the $500 Returning Student Deposit.

Athletics

From Athletics:

  • Basketball — It’s been a great year inside the Joel Coliseum as another season of Demon Deacon hoops come to a close. Student attendance was the best Wake Forest has seen since ’08-’09 as your students broke records in both total attendance for the season and average attendance per game. Outside of a great product on the court, shuttles to the games, free parking for students, giveaways, t-shirts and much more all played a role in their engagement of our basketball programs.
  • Football Spring Game — Football is back as spring practice kicked off on Monday, March 13th for the upcoming 2023 season. The spring game is just a month away as Coach Clawon and the Deacs look to showcase what will be the first look at the 2023 Demon Deacon squad. Kickoff is Saturday, April 15 at 2 p.m. Attendance is free for all.
  • Baseball ACC Play — The No. 2 nationally ranked Demon Deacon baseball team begins their conference slate of home games on Friday, March 17 against Notre Dame. Tickets for the series start at just $10. Premium reserved tables start at just $20 per seat and our All-American Club is available for add-on for just $20.

Campus Safety

Wake Forest uses the Wake Alert system — voicemail, email, text message, website and web banners, and social media (Twitter, Facebook) — to notify faculty, staff and students when the University believes that members of the Wake Forest community could be at risk. Those messages are issued as soon as pertinent, vetted information is available. It may take time for authorities to investigate, verify and provide instructions or updates.
