WakeParents & Families

E-newsletter from the Office of Family Engagement

At last! Move-in is here! Campus just doesn’t feel the same in the summer, and we are thrilled to welcome all our students back to campus!

We also want to offer a special welcome to incoming P’26 and transfer families. Please be sure to read the section of this e-newsletter with information specific to new families.

We recently communicated our fall COVID expectations to the campus community, as well as families. If you did not read that message, please be sure to do so. We also want to note that the Our Way Forward website is transitioning from the main point of Wake Forest’s COVID-19 information to a site that directs community members to relevant COVID-19 information on the websites of appropriate campus departments, such as the Student Health Service.

At the start of every semester, we encourage all families to read our Family Communications Guidelines and Philosophy so you have an understanding of how Wake Forest communicates with

families. Let’s make it a great year, Deac families!

Resources and News

From Student Financial Services:

  • Wake Forest offers an elective tuition insurance plan through A.W.G. Dewar, Inc. that will help minimize financial loss if a student suffers a serious illness or accident and must withdraw before the end of a semester. Please see the Tuition Insurance page of our website for more information on how the Dewar Tuition Insurance assures up to a 75% tuition refund throughout the term. The last day to apply for this plan is August 21, 2022.
  • All students must choose to stay enrolled in or waive the Student Blue Insurance (health insurance premium) before August 31st. Please go to the Student Insurance website for additional information.
  • Have your students Sign up for Direct Deposit! Wake Forest encourages students to utilize direct deposit as doing so provides students with a convenient and secure way to access their funds faster.

From Residence Life and Housing: We can’t wait to welcome you and your Deac to campus this month! In this newsletter, we run through some final reminders for our upcoming opening dates and point you in the direction of helpful information hubs for your use in the coming year. Read more.

From the Office of Sustainability: Moving your student in this fall? Here are a few sustainability tips to help you reduce your students' waste:

  • If your student is a first-year or transfer student, make sure they pick-up their recycling tote to help them recycle throughout the year
  • Empty and break down all cardboard and leave it in designated cardboard drop off locations. Drop off locations will be outside of residence halls. Cardboard does not go in the dumpster!
  • Make sure your student checks-in with their roommate before moving to see what they are bringing. They may be buying the same thing!

From Campus Recreation: Campus Recreation has something for everyone to get involved with early! We offer a variety of intramural sports all semester long, fitness classes 7 days a week, competitive and recreational club sports, Outdoor Pursuits, a climbing wall, aquatics, and so much more! Encourage your Deacs to follow us on Instagram @wfucampusrec and check on www.campusrec.wfu.edu to learn more about how students can get involved. And kick off the year with us at our 1st year Kickball Tournament on 8/21--your student can register on imleagues.com/wakeforest.

From the CARE Team: Caring support and outreach for the Wake community is available through the Dean of Students Case Management Team. The team provides non-clinical, private case management support to assist Deacs with personal, medical and mental health challenges. The team aims to cultivate a culture of care and compassion by providing support to Deacs and by encouraging an ethic of care through campus outreach and education. Parents, family members, faculty, students and staff can refer a Deac for CARE support. Read more about case management and ways to make a referral here.

From the Office of Sustainability and Transportation and Parking Services: No Car Needed! Ways to Get Around Campus and Winston-Salem Without a Personal Vehicle

  • Wake Forest’s Reynolda campus is extremely walkable and bikeable. Most anywhere can be reached on foot in less than 15 minutes!
  • A new centralized shuttle hub between Poteat and Kitchin Halls will debut this fall, resulting in more efficient shuttle services, improved route times, and a simpler schedule. Two new bus shelters will keep riders protected from inclement weather.
  • Wake Forest operates a fleet of scheduled shuttles and on-demand service to the campus community. The Wake Lines offer service to Wake Downtown, Hanes Mall, Target, and the Coliseum for basketball games. Shuttles are also offered to and from Greensboro (GSO) and Charlotte (CLT) airports during designated break times throughout the year.
  • Need to get somewhere not served by a shuttle? Grab a Zipcar — conveniently located in multiple locations on campus — for a low rate that includes gas and insurance!

From the Office of Personal and Career Development (OPCD): Classes begin on August 22nd and recruiters will start arriving on campus as early as September 11th to recruit students for full-time jobs and internships for the summer of 2023. Make sure your student doesn’t miss out on our career events, financial support for internships or professional development, as well as job and graduate school opportunities. No matter your student’s interests, major, or situation, we can help them to be career ready and successful. Learn more here.

Campus Safety

Wake Forest uses the Wake Alert system — voicemail, email, text message, website and web banners, and social media (Twitter, Facebook) — to notify faculty, staff and students when the University believes that members of the Wake Forest community could be at risk. Those messages are issued as soon as pertinent, vetted information is available. It may take time for authorities to investigate, verify and provide instructions or updates.
