WakeParents & Families

E-newsletter from the Office of Family Engagement

It’s a new year and a new semester — let’s make the most of it!

President Wente shared a message to students on Monday in honor of the MLK holiday. You can read the whole message here; this is an excerpt:

  • “Today, and every day, we have the opportunity to reflect on and make meaning of Dr. King’s legacy and what it teaches us in this moment in history at Wake Forest and in our society.

As cruel and abusive rhetoric increasingly feels like the norm in society rather than the exception, Dr. King calls us to listen to all voices and trust in the power of what he called ‘unarmed truth,’ in his 1964 Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech: ‘I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. This is why right, temporarily defeated, is stronger than evil triumphant...’

Next week, I will share several ways the University is continuing to meet our current moment and ensure our Wake Forest community can thrive in the midst of challenges. In particular, we are focused on reinforcing our commitments to free expression, academic freedom, belonging and inclusion. I strongly believe that open dialogue and debate can flourish in a community that also cares for one another. Fostering such an environment is not easy, especially now, but we are Wake Forest — we can do this, if we do it together.”

With the new year comes changes, and one such change is that we have just announced that Student Health Service has been renamed Deacon Health:

  • “Deacon Health focuses beyond services and extends to students’ holistic health, including: general physicals, annual reproductive health exams, immunizations and allergy injections, routine illness and injury care, psychiatric support, pharmaceutical and laboratory services, preparatory preventative counseling, and support for students traveling for study abroad. In addition Deacon Health maintains community partnerships for benefits such as STI clinics and obtaining convenient and low-cost medications.

With a team of five primary care providers, ten nurses, three certified medical assistants, four support staff, an onsite pharmacist, lab director and x-ray radiologic technician, Deacon Health is well-resourced to meet students’ needs.”

We are so happy your students are back with us and we look forward to a great spring. Go Deacs!

For new families (of Early Decision students admitted to the Class of 2028)

Welcome, P’28s (families of newly-admitted students in the Class of 2028)! This spring, we will be updating our New Students website for the Class of 2028. It should go live around May 1st. Please note that all the information on that website right now pertains to the Class of 2027, not your incoming students, so do not go by those dates, or complete any forms there. We will send all P’28 families an email around May 1st once the new site is ready.

We are including you in this e-newsletter so that you can begin to see the kinds of communications that Wake Forest families receive. Any information in this Incoming Families section of the e-newsletter pertains to P ’28 families. But keep in mind that the details and deadlines in other sections of this e-newsletter only apply to currently-enrolled students (Classes of 2024-2027), not your incoming Deacs.
