The University has created a website that shares resources related to the ongoing Israel-Palestine crisis. On it, you will find Dr. Wente’s blog post on Friday: A guide in moments of crisis: ‘For Humanity’, as well as a University statement, list of resources, and more, including this quote that resonated with me personally:
“As we navigate the days and weeks ahead, let us continue to demonstrate care and empathy for each other and contribute to a supportive community environment where all members can study, learn, and work.”
In other campus news, Fall Break has just concluded, which means we are at the halfway point of the semester. And there are definitely some things to celebrate:
Hit the Bricks, which raises money for the Brian Piccolo Cancer Research Fund, set some new records. Here’s Hit The Bricks 2023 By the Numbers:
- 21,605 laps run
- 116 participating teams
- 1,752 Participants
- $301,722.22 raised for the Brian Piccolo Cancer Research Fund
See a photostory, YouTube video, and first-year student video of the event. Many thanks to all who ran or walked, and for families who supported Hit the Bricks.
Our next edition of the Face to Face speaker series is on November 1, featuring Daymond John, Founder & CEO of FUBU, Presidential Ambassador for Global Entrepreneurship, Star of ABC’s “Shark Tank” and CEO of The Shark Group. While students can attend the student-only pre-event, families can purchase tickets to the keynote address here.
Last (but certainly not least, in the eyes of your students), we are about a month away from Pitsgiving! Pitsgiving is our own version of Thanksgiving and it will be held Thursday, November 16 in the Pit. Students can get turkey, stuffing, mac and cheese, green beans, and all the traditional fixins, plus pumpkin pie and other great desserts, and they can do Pitsgiving for lunch and/or dinner.
Think of Pitsgiving like the adult “Friendsgiving,” where you have a Thanksgiving meal with your closest friends who are like family to you — your Deacs will have this big meal on campus with the ones they love, and then they’ll go home a week later and do it again with your family.
Go Deacs!

From the Office of Residence Life and Housing: Last week’s Fall Break marks the halfway point of the semester for our students. With midterms (mostly) behind us, we encourage our students to prepare for upcoming breaks and our Spring 2024 Housing Requests, available October 18. In this month’s newsletter, we’ll cover all the need-to-knows for important dates ahead, including Spring Intent due at the end of this month. Read more.
From the Office of Personal and Career Development (OPCD): Amazingly, fall break is already behind us. We hope your student got some well-deserved rest. Wake Forest students have abundant resources on the College and School of Business career websites. If your student wants to get life and career ready on their own time and schedule, they have 24/7 access to Career Core (featuring professor Heidi Robinson!) and LinkedIn Learning (to learn excel, AI, and many other professional/technical skills and subjects). In addition, your student is receiving The OPCD Brief, a weekly e-newsletter that highlights each week’s hot jobs and internships, and job and graduate school tips. For more information, see the OPCD website.
From Student Financial Services:
- Have your Deacs be on the lookout for an email from Student Financial Services in the next couple of weeks if they haven’t provided their Tax Identification Number (TIN) or Social Security Number (SSN) to WFU. We are required to provide all students a complete 1098-T Tuition Tax Form each tax year, and the IRS requires that the TIN/SSN be included on this form.
- We will begin billing for the spring 2024 semester on November 1. Make sure your student has added you as an Authorized Payer in DEAC so you receive the appropriate notifications and are granted access and permission to discuss the details of the student account.
From the Office of the Vice President for Campus Life
- The We Are Wake initiative is here to support student mental health and wellbeing. Wake Forest community members and families can call 336.758.CARE (2273) or use the online referral form to connect students with staff that can provide support and help them find the mental health resources that are right for them.
- Is your student looking for other ways to get connected? Drop by Dr. Shea’s weekly Office Hours in 206 Reynolda Hall. Follow her on Instagram (@sheakiddbrown) to see when the next event is scheduled. Students can also stop by an upcoming Gold & Black Chat for an informal opportunity to connect with President Wente and Dr. Shea: upcoming date: Monday, October 16, 4-5 p.m. in the Intercultural Center.
