E-newsletter from the Office of Family Engagement

We hope your Deacs’ semesters have started off on a good note. In case you missed it, I wanted to share the good news that in U.S. News and World Report’s 2022-23 Best Colleges, Wake Forest ranked 29th overall among 443 national universities and was ranked 21st for undergraduate teaching. This puts Wake Forest in the top 30 national universities for the 27th consecutive year.

“Wake Forest is among the nation’s best at delivering on the promise of an exceptional education, and I am pleased to see that commitment to excellence recognized,” said Wake Forest University President Susan R. Wente. “We know our position in the rankings is anchored by the extraordinary teaching and scholarship of our faculty across the University, and the academic success of the talented students Wake Forest enrolls.”

Go Deacs!

Since this is the last monthly e-newsletter before Family Weekend (Oct. 7-9), here are some key details from the Family Weekend committee:

Family Weekend is almost here! We’re gearing up to greet our Demon Deacon families October 7-9. If you haven’t registered yet, please do so as soon as possible.

Please note that online t-shirt sales will close Sept. 19 at 11:59 p.m. A limited number of t-shirts will be available for purchase during the weekend.

Football tickets should be purchased here (while supplies last).

***Starting on Sept. 20 ***: Any changes to existing ticket orders will become non-refundable.

The Family Weekend schedule is available through the Guidebook app (note: this is the same app that was used for 2021 and 2022 Orientation/New Deac Week). Please see instructions on the Family Weekend website (if you use your camera on the QR code on that page, it will give you a link to the Family Weekend Guide).

As the weekend approaches, families may have a variety of questions. Please visit our Frequently Asked Questions page prior to arrival on campus so you know what to expect.

Not everyone’s families are able to make it for Family Weekend, so if you are planning to attend, please consider inviting students who are solo that weekend to join you for dinners or other events.

We look forward to seeing you on campus very soon for Family Weekend!

Go Deacs!

Events

Family Weekend — October 7-9: Please visit the Family Weekend website for full details on this terrific weekend.

From Theatre and Dance: This Girl Laughs, This Girl Cries, This Girl Does Nothing: Join us for the charming story of three sisters who embark on fantastical journeys as they grow up and follow their dreams; there are sword fights, adventures at sea, and one very angry badger. This uplifting fairy tale is appropriate for all ages. The play is by Finegan Kruckemeyer and directed by Brook Davis. Tickets are $15 adults, $12 senior citizens, and $7 students and can be purchased online at theatre.wfu.edu or at the Box Office by calling (336) 758-5295. WFU Faculty/Staff and children under the age of 12 can receive a complimentary ticket by calling the Theatre & Dance Box Office at (336) 758-5295 (offer not available online). Show dates: September 16, 22, & 23 at 7 p.m.; Sept. 17 & 24 at 11 a.m.; Sept. 18 & 25 at 2 p.m. — all on the Tedford Stage, Scales Fine Arts Center.

Global Programs and Studies will host a Study Abroad Fair for students on Sept. 20 from 12-4 p.m. in Benson 401. As part of study abroad planning, students should make sure their passports are accurate and up to date. Please review this helpful document for more information: Passport Information for Studying Abroad. As a reminder, students should avoid international travel immediately prior to going abroad in order to avoid potential visa issues. For more information, please visit study abroad.wfu.edu!

From Wake Forest Executive Education: Like the organizations they work for, individuals who succeed in today’s business world are the ones who never stop learning. Join Wake Forest Executive Education for one of our upcoming open enrollment short courses this fall:

From CLASS (Center for Learning, Access, and Success): On Tuesday, September 20th from 2-4 p.m., students are invited to join CLASS on the Quad near the ping pong table for "A Taste Of Something CLASS(y)." Students can meet academic coaches and peer tutors, get learning aids like whiteboards and timers, and enjoy yummy snacks. They will get a "taste" of helpful learning strategies, see how a comprehensive syllabus can be a game changer, and learn why a timer is a helpful study tool. And more!

From the OCCE (Office of Civic and Community Engagement):

  • Register to vote! Students can join Deacs Decide and the Office of Civic & Community Engagement on Tuesday, September 20 from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. in the Tribble Courtyard for National Voter Registration Day! Students can register to vote for the first time, update their voter registration, and get all of their election-related questions answered. All they need to know is their on-campus address! Students can even volunteer to help with the event.
    • If your student decides to register or vote in their home state, they will need to sign up to receive an absentee ballot. Absentee ballot regulations vary by state, students should reach out to their local board of elections to get information on their state and county’s process and deadlines.
    • Early Voting in NC: The early voting period for the 2022 general election begins Thursday, October 20, 2022 and ends at 3 p.m. on Saturday, November 5, 2022. During early voting, voters may cast a ballot at an early voting site in their county, and would-be voters may same-day register and vote. This is different from Election Day, where registered voters must vote at their assigned polling place. Students can participate in early voting at Winston-Salem First, about a quarter mile from the Polo Road Gate entrance to the Reynolda Campus.
  • Register for Hit The Bricks: Each year, the Wake Forest community comes together in the fight against cancer, running and walking laps for the day. Students are encouraged to grab their friends, and start making their team! This year’s event will take place on Thursday, October 6. Registration is $25 and includes a t-shirt. All proceeds go to the Brian Piccolo Cancer Research Fund. There is a virtual option for parents and families to participate: register via the virtual registration link and then complete this Google Form.
  • Get involved with Project Pumpkin: Does your student love Halloween and volunteering? If so, they should mark their calendars for one of the largest student-led community events: Project Pumpkin! The traditional on-campus event will take place on Tues., Oct. 25, with a new event in partnership with Winston Salem Parks and Recreation, on Thurs., Oct. 27.

From the Women’s Center:

  • The Women in Philanthropy program is sponsored by the Office of Civic & Community Engagement and the Women’s Center. Members will join the Women’s Fund of Winston-Salem and participate in 3-4 meetings/site visits. Members will learn about the history of philanthropy, key issues affecting women and girls in Forsyth County, and organizations that are making a difference. Members will be able to review grant proposals and vote on how Women’s Fund dollars are being spent. Interested students should complete this application through Google forms by Sept. 20.
  • Wake for Women: The Women’s Center sponsors tailgates throughout the year in support of women’s athletics. Parents and families are welcome! Our kickoff on September 22nd will be at Women’s Soccer v. Clemson. On Family Weekend we will be at Field Hockey on Oct. 7 and Volleyball on Oct. 9, and we hope you’ll join us! Come for food, t-shirts, and lots of Demon Deacon pride. No registration required.

Resources and News

From Student Financial Services:

  • Students should be on the lookout for an email from Student Financial Services in the next couple of weeks if they haven’t provided their Tax Identification Number (TIN) or Social Security Number (SSN) to WFU. We are required to provide all students a complete 1098-T Tuition Tax Form each tax year, and the IRS requires that the TIN/SSN be included on this form.
  • Have your students sign up for Direct Deposit! Wake Forest encourages students to utilize direct deposit, as doing so provides students with a convenient and secure way to access their funds faster.

From Deacon Dining: Fall semester is here, and Deacon Dining has brought some amazing updates to the table this year: everything from a new and improved meal plan, a fresh look to our allergen-friendly station in The Pit, swiping out hunger, and more. To read more about all of our dining updates for this year, click here!

From Residence Life and Housing: It’s the start of fall in the Forest! This month we have links to residential reminders your student receives at the start of each semester, provide tips for supporting your students as they navigate roommate dynamics, and offer suggestions for #WFU26 for those of you with new Deacs. Read more.

From Campus Recreation: Is your student looking to boost their resume and earn some extra money ? Campus Recreation is hiring! Working for Campus Recreation will give your student the opportunity to take on leadership roles, practice conflict resolution, fine tune their management and communication skills, and much more! More information about open positions can be found here.

From the Office of Personal and Career Development (OPCD):

  • September is an important month for students who are exploring the world of work. We will be welcoming hundreds of recruiters to interact with students — both on campus and in virtual events. Encourage your student to:
    1. Log in to Handshake and make certain their profile and resume are up to date.
    2. Register on Handshake for the Fall Career Fair on September 14th and prepare to meet employers to learn about internship and full-time job opportunities or explore potential companies and careers.
    3. Check Handshake frequently for newly posted events, internships, and job opportunities.
    4. See a career coach for guidance.
    5. Sign up for Career Pathways emails with their WFU email. (Even if your student is planning to apply for graduate or professional school after graduation, we encourage them to come to see us.)
  • See additional information for College students and School of Business students.
  • Power Up: Super (Power) Skills for Your Life + Career — Ever heard of the term “Power Skills”? These are the key skills that give your students the power to communicate, lead, and collaborate more effectively both in college and once they enter the world of work. Each month this fall, the WFUMentoring Resource Center will be sharing tips and resources for how students can develop their COREFour Mentoring Power Skills and put them into practice. Encourage your student to create a Handshake profile in order to receive the OPCD’s weekly emails, which is where students can learn about Power Skills plus get access to webinars, action items, best practice guides, and other campus resources.

Campus Safety

Wake Forest uses the Wake Alert system — voicemail, email, text message, website and web banners, and social media (Twitter, Facebook) — to notify faculty, staff and students when the University believes that members of the Wake Forest community could be at risk. Those messages are issued as soon as pertinent, vetted information is available. It may take time for authorities to investigate, verify and provide instructions or updates.
