WakeParents & Families

E-newsletter from the Office of Family Engagement

Commencement was held on Monday, May 16 and it was a glorious day for all. Though there had been predictions of rain in the days preceding the ceremony, the weather held out and it was a gorgeous (if steamy) day. If you were not there yourself — or if you want to relive the day! — here are several links I hope you will enjoy:

Congratulations to the Class of 2022! Go out into the world and do great things! And P’22s, please know you will always have a special place in the Wake Forest family.

As we say goodbye to our P’22s, we want to warmly welcome our P’26 parents and families, now that our Regular Decision students have officially enrolled as of May 1st. P’26s, please be sure to read the special section for you below, with lots of information about your students’ matriculation.

We wish all our WFU families a happy, healthy, and restful summer!

Go Deacs!

Incoming Families of the Class of 2026

Welcome, P’26s (families of newly-admitted students in the Class of 2026)! Important steps for incoming families:

  • Please continue working through our page for incoming families and all its subpages to see important dates and deadlines, get advice about supporting your student, and more.
  • We have been sending out a Weekly Update for Incoming Families at the start of each week. A few notes:
    • We send these updates out via email. If you are not receiving them, please be sure you have Verified Your Family Record so that we have your correct email address.
    • If your email address is correct in Wake Network, check your spam/junk/quarantine folders, as sometimes people’s Internet Service Providers accidentally route them there.
    • You may also need to talk to your ISP or IT department so see if they can tweak your firewall settings.
  • Please consider joining us for a New Student Reception. Two virtual receptions will be offered — one on June 22 and the other on July 20. These sessions will be recorded and posted in the days following the events.
    • At the end of each of the virtual receptions, we will have special information for international students and families.
  • We hope that your family will register for a regional New Student Reception should one be offered in your area. Details, dates, and registration can be found here (this list will be updated throughout the summer as new locations are added).
  • If you had not already been doing this, begin giving your students more and more independence in making decisions, handling routine tasks, communicating with campus offices, and managing deadlines, rather than you providing answers, giving reminders of what they need to do, or taking care of tasks for them. Summer is the time to help students get into the mode of self-managing, as they will need to be able to self-manage effectively once they arrive for college.

From the Office of Academic Advising:

  • During the month of June, new students for the Class of 2026 are encouraged to contact the Office of Academic Advising to have a telephone advising session with a member of our staff.
    • Students should follow the schedule here and should use Forestry 101, the New Student website to prepare specific questions.
    • Due to volume, we cannot offer multiple telephone advising sessions, so please have your student prepare their questions, as much as possible, ahead of time.
    • After their advising session, if they have additional questions, we ask that they email undergraduateadvising@wfu.edu. This email address is monitored closely, and your student will typically receive a reply within 48 hours.
    • We will be accepting advising calls Monday - Friday, June 6 - uly 1, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. EDT. No appointment is necessary, but students must call during their assigned week (see schedule above). The University will be closed on Monday, June 20 in observance of Juneteenth.
  • New incoming students will receive a link to an online Guided Pre-Registration Survey via their WFU email on Friday, May 27. This important survey will help prepare your student for registration as well as their June Advising session. Incoming first-year students will be registering for a maximum of 17 credit hours between July 6-13.

From WakeWare, the Student Laptop Program: WakeWare, the Student Laptop Program, allows you to purchase a powerful recommended Apple or Microsoft Surface device to run robust academic software at a negotiated price, bundled with accidental damage and theft protection, and provides a loaner laptop in case repairs are needed.

  • Purchasing opens June 1, but we encourage you to wait until later in June to place your order in case there are new hardware announcements or back to school promotions. (rumored in June!)
  • Students with institutional aid are eligible for a Technology Grant and will be communicated with to their WFU email address in May.

For more information, visit the WakeWare website. As a reminder, in order to support a portable learning environment, every student is required to bring a laptop to campus. You can learn more about minimum computer requirements here.

Academics

From the Office of Academic Advising (OAA):

  • Final grades for all Spring 2022 courses should be available for students now.
  • Summer Session I will begin on May 23. Students can register for summer courses via WIN up until May 27. However, if a student plans to participate in Summer Session I, they should register before the start of classes for Summer Session I. For more information, please visit Summer Session website.
  • The staff of the Office of Academic Advising will be available during our normal business hours over the summer, Monday, Wednesday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. Additionally, your student can reach us by phone at 336-758-3320 or via email at undergraduateadvising@wfu.edu.

From the School of Business: Now that the spring semester has concluded, students may be contemplating various ways to spend their summer. We hope they might consider SportsBIZ, now in its 3rd year. The SportsBIZ team gave us their Top 5 Reasons To Enroll in SportsBIZ:

  2. Networking Opportunities — Speakers, Faculty and Students!
  3. Real-world Experience — Solve a real sports-business problem which provides differentiation in interviews and on resumes!
  4. Business Education — Learn 8 business essentials — vital knowledge for any major!
  5. Career Readiness — Jump start career preparations and explore sports-industry career opportunities!

Events

Wake Forest Executive Education is pleased to announce new dates for our Analytics for Leaders short course this fall. In this program (delivered virtually over four half-day sessions), we will provide participants with the knowledge to create a self-sustaining data-driven culture. Effective data-driven organizations demonstrate data literacy at all levels, use data to drive decisions, and most importantly have data-driven leadership characterized by an understanding of Analytics Strategy, a familiarity with structured Problem Framing, and a corporate-wide competency in Communicating with Data. Analytics for Leaders was recently featured by Fortune magazine as “One of ten science and business analytics courses that should be on every executive’s radar.” Reserve your seat today!

Resources and News

From Student Financial Services:

  • If your student is taking any Summer courses, please be advised that Summer school tuition and fees are due by June 1.
  • In preparation for Fall 2022, please ensure your student adds you as an authorized payer in DEAC to ensure statement notifications are sent to you; for more information as well as instruction, please visit the SFS website. We will begin billing for the fall semester in July 2022.

From the Office of Sustainability: The Sustainability Intern Class of 2022 is affectionately referred to as the GOAT, and rightly so. Never before has the Office of Sustainability seen such a large and impactful group of interns graduate in a single year. These 14 individuals, representing a combined 52 semesters of service have shaped the work of our office and left a permanent mark on sustainability at Wake Forest. Read more about our graduating intern team here.

From the Office of Personal and Career Development (OPCD):

  • It’s not too late for your students to find summer internships for 2022 or full-time positions after graduation in May. The job market remains hot with many great opportunities still available. And if your student has an unpaid internship this summer, there are still a few stipends available; students can also learn tips on how to make the most of their internship.
  • If your student needs to “get ready” for the job search, they can access new online career course content, “Career Core,” featuring Heidi Robinson.
  • For School of Business students, our Market Readiness and Employment (MRE) career coaches support students year-round, and our MRE 2022 Kick Starter” job search resource is available to students through Canvas.

Campus Safety

Wake Forest uses the Wake Alert system — voicemail, email, text message, website and web banners, and social media (Twitter, Facebook) — to notify faculty, staff and students when the University believes that members of the Wake Forest community could be at risk. Those messages are issued as soon as pertinent, vetted information is available. It may take time for authorities to investigate, verify and provide instructions or updates.
