WakeParents & Families

E-newsletter from the Office of Family Engagement

The semester is at an end, finals are finished, and your Deacs are home with you. May they find rest, relaxation, and renewal over the winter break, and may you share many happy family moments together.

The Deacs are going bowling for a program-record seventh-straight season! Wake Forest has accepted an invitation to play Southeastern Conference representative Missouri in the 2022 Union Home Mortgage Gasparilla Bowl on Friday, December 23 at 6:30 p.m. ET in Tampa at Raymond James Stadium. The game will be broadcast on ESPN. Families can click here to purchase tickets (student ticket information is available here), and more information is available in the Events section of this e-newsletter.

Even as we celebrate the end of this semester, we are planning for the spring semester and want to start on as healthy a note as possible. As such, our Campus Health Committee shared some guidance on how students can stay healthy during the break, as well as what to do before they return to campus in January. You can read the full message here, and I am sharing key points below:

  • Avoid being around people who are actively ill. Consider avoiding large gatherings, or wear a well-fitting mask if you do attend.
  • We encourage students, faculty, and staff to take a COVID-19 test within 72 hours before arriving on campus in January, as we have typically seen surges of COVID after breaks.
  • Do not return to campus in January if you are actively ill:
    • For the flu, COVID, RSV, etc., remain at home or away from campus until your symptoms are improved and until you have not had a fever (without using fever-reducing medications) for 24 hours. Read more.
    • For gastrointestinal illnesses such as noroviruses, individuals may remain contagious for up to two days after their symptoms have resolved. Consequently, they should avoid returning to campus until that time.

As a reminder, Wake Forest administrative offices will be closed December 23-January 2 for the holidays. Our After Hours Help page will connect you to resources if you have an urgent need that cannot wait until we reopen on January 3.

We wish you and your family a joyous Winter Break and all the best for the holidays. See you in 2023!

Executive Director of Family Communications

From Summer Session: While many of you are finalizing your holiday menus and travel plans, we at Wake Forest are already hard at work planning for summer 2023. The Summer Session website has been updated with all of the information your student needs to begin considering how Summer Session might benefit them. Registration for summer 2023 will open on March 13, leaving plenty of time for your student to peruse our course list and identify classes that will meet their individual needs. As they consider our offerings, students can contact us http://summer.college.wfu.edu/contact/ with any questions that will help them prepare.

From the Center for Global Programs and Studies (GPS): GPS encourages students who are interested in summer and/or fall study abroad programs to use the winter break to review abroad options, get a jump start on applications, talk with family members about possible plans, and make sure passports are still valid and will have validity for at least 6 months past the end date of their potential programs. Hosted by the Office of Civic & Community Engagement at Wake Forest, Winston-Salem State University, and HandsOn Northwest North Carolina, WFU students are invited to volunteer their time to serve as “Reading Buddies” where they will be paired with children from kindergarten to 5th grade to assist with various educational activities throughout the morning. To learn more or submit a project, contact Dr. Alireza Lari (laria@wfu.edu).

From Student Insurance: now is the time to recheck your student's insurance status as well as be able to either Enroll or Waive Student Blue for the Spring 2023 semester. We are grateful for your continued support and wish you a very Happy Holiday!

Campus Safety

Wake Forest uses the Wake Alert system — voicemail, email, text message, website and web banners, and social media (Twitter, Facebook) — to notify faculty, staff and students when the University believes that members of the Wake Forest community could be at risk. Those messages are issued as soon as pertinent, vetted information is available. It may take time for authorities to investigate, verify and provide instructions or updates.
