E-newsletter from the Office of Family Engagement

Students, faculty, and staff danced the night away at the President’s Ball.

It’s April! Spring is here and campus is arguably at its most beautiful.

April is always a time to look back and look ahead at the same time. We look back to celebrate the accomplishments of our soon-to-be graduates as we gear up for Commencement for the Class of 2024 (and their P’24 families). And we look forward to the arrival of our newly-enrolled Class of 2028 (and their P’28 families) by publishing our updated New Students website May 1 with information for our new students and families.

And campus is eagerly awaiting the arrival of Trevor Noah for our final Face to Face event on April 30. Students are encouraged to attend the student-led event at 5 p.m. in Wait Chapel.

Wishing your Deacs all the best as their semester ends and a strong performance on their final exams. Go Deacs!

For new families (of Early Decision students admitted to the Class of 2028)

Welcome, P’28s (families of newly-admitted students in the Class of 2028)!

We are hard at work on the updates to the New Students website for the Class of 2028 and their P’28 parents and families. The updated site will be published May 1.

For families looking to buy a laptop for their student:

  • WakeWare is the official Wake Forest laptops which are sold online and on campus at the Wake Forest Bookstore.
  • April 15-19, the Bookstore will offer 10% off all Apple laptops and iPads through their Apple Appreciation event. The savings will also apply to Apple laptops in our WakeWare program.
  • WakeWare is the Wake Forest laptop program, with Macbooks and Microsoft Surface laptops chosen by the Information Systems team and available to purchase for home delivery or pickup through the Wake Forest bookstore. WakeWare laptops are specially priced and bundled with four years of onsite Safeware damage and repair coverage (handled through The Bridge IT support desk at ZSR). During repairs, WakeWare students have preferred access to loaners so their work can proceed without disruption. Peruse models and learn more at wakeware.wfu.edu or stop by the Wake Forest Taylor bookstore to view and purchase.
  • Note: some students have access to special technology grant funding. Students receiving this aid are notified through their Wake Forest email account, as well as through their financial aid portal.

NOTE: details and deadlines in the other sections of this e-newsletter only apply to currently-enrolled students (Classes of 2024-2027), not your incoming Deacs.

Academics

From the Office of Academic Advising (OAA):

  • The last day to withdraw from a second part-of-term course with a grade of “W” was April 11.
  • The last day to change from a course that was initially designated pass/fail to a letter grade in an approved full-term course was April 12.
  • Registration for Summer 2024 Sessions https://summer.college.wfu.edu/ ends May 31.
  • Registration for Fall 2024 classes took place beginning April 1 and ended April 5. By now, all students should be registered for a full-time schedule unless they have been approved for part-time status.
  • Spring 2024 classes end on May 1. Final exams begin on May 3 and last until May 10 with Reading Days scheduled for May 2, May 5, and May 8.
  • Commencement activities for the Class of 2024 will take place on Monday, May 20. More information about Commencement can be found on the Commencement website.

From the College:

  • Planning ahead: Spring finals are right around the corner. Library spaces tend to fill up during finals week, so your Deacs may be looking for new places to study in our academic buildings. Several academic buildings will offer extended late-night hours in open common spaces, e.g., lobbies, lounges, etc. during Spring 2024 Finals Week (May 2-10, 2024). College classroom space may be reserved for individual or group work, but must be planned ahead.
  • Check out Wake Study Space for more information and a robust list of campus study space resources and guidance.

From Undergraduate Summer Session:

  • Registration for Summer Session 2024 remains open through Friday, May 31. The Summer Session website has all the information you need to consider how Summer Session might benefit your current or incoming student. Please contact us with any questions.

From CLASS – Center for Learning, Access, and Student Success:
Encourage your students to attend:

  • Our monthly OWLS workshop: Preparing for Success: Build Your Finals Study Plan on Monday, April 29, 6 p.m., ZSR 476
  • CLASS Cafe on Wednesday, April 24th: your Deacs can drop by anytime between 3:30-5 p.m. on the main Quad. We’ll feature seasonal treats and fun conversations!

From Military Science Department and ROTC:

  • If your student is looking for a unique addition to their Wake Forest experience or they want to expand their understanding of the military, encourage them to try out a Military Science course. MIL 121: Introduction to the Army and MIL 123: Leadership and Ethics are open to all students.
  • If they want to learn more about joining ROTC and earning scholarship money, reach out to us at ROTC@wfu.edu.

NEWS

From Inside WFU:

Students need to download Alertus, a new security tool.

  • Currently enrolled students (i.e., Classes of ’24-’27) are being asked to download Alertus, a new security tool. All students are asked to download Alertus, a new tool to the University’s existing emergency communication plan. Alertus software allows University Police to send a pop-up, full-screen desktop warning when immediate safety actions are needed. Students can download the software on their laptop to add the pop-up alert option to their computer so that they don’t miss an urgent notification that would require them to take immediate action. Once installed, a new icon will appear on the computer’s system tray or menu bar to let the student know Alertus is installed.

From Communications and External Relations:

  • Did you know you can subscribe to Photostories and get notice when a new one is published? Subscribe today and see past photostories you may have missed.

From Workday Student::

  • Now that advising, academic planning, and course registration are rolling in Workday, the University is looking forward to the next milestone in July, which focuses on moving student financials activities into Workday, including billing, financial aid disbursements and more.
  • Students will be invited to virtual demonstrations to learn how to find and engage with their financial information — please encourage your student to attend!
  • And as a reminder, if you haven’t already, you may receive an email from WFU Workday with the subject line Proxy Account Information saying an account has been set up for you in Workday. That’s because your student is giving you access to information, which may include the ability to see and pay bills.
  • Note that you will continue to use DEAC to pay any remaining spring or summer balances, but starting in July, you will only use Workday. Watch for more information from Student Financial Services in the coming weeks.

Resources

From the Office of Personal and Career Development (OPCD)

  • As the academic year draws to a close and we approach commencement, we understand this is a time of excitement and anticipation for our students and their families. While many of our students have successfully secured employment, it's important to note that it's common for some to still be in the job-searching process.
  • We take pride in the fact that over 97% of Wake Forest graduates are traditionally employed or enrolled in graduate programs within six months of graduation. We encourage your students to stay positive and persistent in their job search.
  • We have compiled a list of helpful tips to assist in this journey. Please remember, our team is always here to support your student in every step of their career path.

From Student Financial Services:

  • Congratulations to the parents and families of our May degree candidates! To prepare for Commencement, your students will need to have student clearance; please be sure your students are checking their student accounts for any outstanding charges to be paid, or credits that can be refunded.
  • We encourage our future alumni to register for their WFU Alumni Gmail account.

From Transportation and Parking Services:

FAQ: How can my student get around campus and the community?

  • Wake Forest is a compact, walkable, and bikeable campus with a robust shuttle system and car-sharing service. Here are some alternative transportation options available to students:
    • Ride the Wake Line, with continual service to Wake Downtown, popular shopping areas, and off-campus housing. Airport shuttles are available and a popular option for students during seasonal breaks. Download the Passio GO app to track WFU shuttles in real time.
    • Bring a bike to campus with you! Registration is free and bike racks are prevalent on campus. The ReCycle Bike Share program offers a limited number of semester-long loaners.
    • Hop in a Zipcar! Zipcars are located near the first-year residence halls and are available to all students 18+. Rates include gas and secondary insurance.

Athletics

From Athletics:

  • For the third year in a row, all football game tickets — including for the Family Weekend game — will be purchased directly from the Wake Forest Ticket Office and will go on sale Tuesday, May 21 at 10 a.m. A single game ticket and parking order link will be provided closer to the on sale date.
