Wake Forest celebrates the Class of 2023 at Commencement

Yesterday was Commencement, and despite predictions of rain earlier in the week, both the Baccalaureate and Commencement ceremonies went off without a hitch.

Here is a lot of Commencement coverage to enjoy:

We are so proud of all our ’23 graduates, and we hope they will return to campus often, certainly for Homecoming. To our P’23 families, you will also always be part of our larger Wake Forest family too! And P’24s — your time will be here before you know it! Here is a countdown clock you can bookmark as you prepare for your ‘24s’ special day.

Though it is still a few months away, we are already hard at work on plans for Family Weekend (September 22-24). Here are some important dates for football ticket sales and event tickets:

  • Family Weekend football tickets went on sale today (May 16) via our Athletics department website (we no longer sell football tickets via the Family Weekend website).
  • Family Weekend is September 22-24, and we play Georgia Tech on September 23 (game time will be announced 10 days before the game due to television scheduling).
    • Important note: Students can get a free ticket to sit in the students' football section with the Screamin' Demon Rewards App (ticket claims open at noon the Monday before the game: Sept. 18 at noon ET). If your student wants to sit with you, you will need to purchase a ticket for your student.
  • Family Weekend event registration will open July 11. We will have more details to share later this summer; you may wish to put a reminder in your calendar now. If you would like to begin making travel arrangements, here is a high-level overview of the weekend’s events:
    • Registration for Family Weekend will begin at 10 am on Friday morning, September 22. We will host our annual Deacon Family Festivities that afternoon, followed by the Friday night meal (tickets sold separately), and the night of entertainment. Saturday the 23rd will host a variety of pre-game activities which include access to the student tailgate area before the game. On Sunday the 24th, we conclude the weekend with a farewell brunch (tickets sold separately).
    • Other activities and experiences such as tours, lectures, presentations and the like are currently being planned. We look forward to having you with us in September and look forward to seeing you there.

Just as our P’23s depart, our P’27s and transfer families will arrive! Please look for your special section of this e-newsletter for new families.

And to all our families, we hope you and your Deacs have a wonderful and restorative summer! Go Deacs!

Incoming families of the Class of 2027

The New Students website went live on May 1. Please ensure your student is working through the action items on the First-Year Student Checklist or the Transfer Student Checklist, and that you are working through the New Families Checklist.

From the Office of Academic Advising:

  • During the month of June, new students for the Class of 2027 are encouraged to contact the Office of Academic Advising to have a telephone advising session with a member of our staff. Students should follow the schedule here and should use the New Students website to prepare specific questions.
    • We will be accepting advising calls Monday–Friday, June 6–30, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. EDT. No appointment is necessary, but students must call during their assigned week (see schedule above). The University will be closed on Monday, June 19th in observance of Juneteenth.
    • Due to volume, we cannot offer multiple telephone advising sessions, so please have your student prepare their questions, as much as possible, ahead of time.
    • After their advising session, if they have additional questions, we ask that they email undergraduateadvising@wfu.edu. This email address is monitored closely, and your student will typically receive a reply within 48 hours.
  • New incoming students will receive a link to an online Guided Pre-Registration Survey via their WFU email on Friday, May 26. This important survey will help prepare your student for registration as well as their June Advising session.
  • Incoming first-year students will be registering for a maximum of 17 credit hours between July 10-13.

From the Student Health Service: Required health and immunization documentation - very important! Be sure your student is on track to get all needed vaccines and getting access to their immunization records:

  • Wake Forest University, per North Carolina state law, requires documentation of certain immunizations for students attending college. Forms must be completed inside the student health portal and all documentation uploaded there by July 1.
  • What your students need to complete these required forms:
    • Their immunization records, including names of vaccines, dates given, healthcare provider signature, clinic’s address, phone number, and facility stamp (or official government stamp).
    • Your student must save a copy of their official immunization records as a PDF (they will need to upload it).
    • It is very important that they complete the required forms in the Student Health Portal on time.

From CLASS (Center for Learning, Access, and Student Success): Does your new student need classroom/learning accommodations? Please read and take action this summer! For students who have used accommodations during high school, please reach out to the CLASS (Center for Learning, Access, and Student Success) office during the summer to get accommodations in place at Wake Forest before you arrive on campus. Students, please login to our Student Portal. Make sure you use your Wake Forest email ID and password to do so. Here is a brief video that will help you register with our office through our student portal. You can also email us at CLASS@wfu.edu or call us 336-758-5929.

Pre-Orientation Programs — Wake Forest offers a variety of Pre-Orientation programs for new students. To learn more about Pre-Orientation, check out the New Students website. Today we are featuring four programs:

  • From the OCCE (Office of Civic and Community Engagement): SPARC and Deacon Camp are Pre-Orientation programs organized by staff and student leaders in the Office of Civic and Community Engagement.
  • Through SPARC, students engage in direct service opportunities with local non-profit organizations while learning about issues impacting Winston-Salem and building relationships with fellow Demon Deacons interested in living out the Pro Humanitate motto.
  • Deacon Camp provides incoming first-year students a 360-degree view of the Wake Forest experience through learning about traditions, getting an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at Wake athletics, and getting a jump start on making meaningful memories on campus.
  • Applications are due on June 30 and will be accepted on a rolling basis.
  • For questions specific to Deacon Camp and SPARC, please reach out to Deb Marke or Cazandra Rebollar.

From Campus Recreation: Campus Rec has two Pre-Orientation programs!

  • Wilderness to Wake takes groups of first-year students, led by trained Outdoor Pursuits staff who are also students themselves. With their firsthand experience, they’ll guide you as you explore not only the mountains and rivers surrounding Wake Forest, but also the adjustment to life as a college student.
  • R.E.C. is a Recreation based Pre-Orientation program that provides members of the incoming class the opportunity to engage with their peers and build a newfound sense of community. Activities include exercise classes, friendly competition through team sports, outdoor recreation, and instructional programming that will help serve as a solid fitness foundation in your new home.

From ROTC: Is your student looking for a unique leadership experience that will help them grow their mental and physical strength? Do they want to complement their academic coursework with an engaged and responsible social group? Are they looking for a way to pay for their college education? Interested students can check out the ROTC with no military commitment by registering for an introductory Military Science course! Learn more at ROTC.wfu.edu or email us at ROTC@wfu.edu.

We include P’27s in this e-newsletter so that you can see how we communicate with Wake Forest families. Please remember that the details and deadlines in the remaining sections of this e-newsletter only apply to currently-enrolled students (Classes of 2023-2026), not your incoming Deacs.

  • Our 2023-2024 Student Blue Insurance Policy has been approved. Open enrollment will begin around July 15 until September 1.
  • As a reminder, all families must either enroll or waive coverage each year of their student’s time at Wake Forest.
  • We are excited to announce our new policy will include (1) preventive dental visit and $200 vision allowance for hardware (glasses). This is the first time we have been able to offer these additional enhancements to the policy with an overall increase of only 0.8% over the current policy.

Resources

From the Office of Residence Life and Housing: As one chapter closes for the Class of 2023, another opens for our continuing and incoming students. This month we celebrate our graduating Deacs and turn our attention to key dates for those returning and those coming home to Wake Forest for the first time.

From the Office of Personal and Career Development (OPCD):

  • It’s been a great year! Congratulations to our Class of 2023 graduates!
  • If you have a recent graduate who is seeking a full-time job, they can continue working with their current career coach or utilize the Alumni Personal and Career Development Center for support.
  • The summer is a great time for your student to get a jump start on figuring out their future! The WFU Career Team is available throughout the summer and will help ALL students who want to explore their options for majors, get ready to pursue job opportunities or internship opportunities or have career or graduate school-related questions. Students can make an appointment here.
  • Importantly, if your student is going abroad next fall, they need to be prepared and develop a plan BEFORE they go so that they don’t miss important events and deadlines. Strongly encourage them to check out the study abroad tips website this summer.
  • For more information, visit our website or contact us at careers@wfu.edu with any questions.

From Campus Rec: If your student has a passion for fitness and leading others, Campus Recreation is looking for students to join our fitness staff this fall. We are offering a 6 week, virtual prep course that starts on May 22. Interested students should complete this form.

From Student Financial Services:

  • Congratulations to our May degree candidates! Graduated students will retain access to DEAC for a short amount of time after graduation, so please encourage your grads to check their student accounts for any outstanding charges, or credit balances that can be refunded. We also encourage our future alumni to register for their WFU Alumni Gmail account.
  • If your student is taking any Summer courses, please be advised that Summer school tuition and fees are due by June 1.

Athletics

From Athletics:

Campus Safety

Wake Forest uses the Wake Alert system — voicemail, email, text message, website and web banners, and social media (Twitter, Facebook) — to notify faculty, staff and students when the University believes that members of the Wake Forest community could be at risk. Those messages are issued as soon as pertinent, vetted information is available. It may take time for authorities to investigate, verify and provide instructions or updates.
